Coming up. . . . . .Cheney's end run!!
Legislation (probably crafted by Cheney's office) is coming up that will give him "fishing rights" through all our email. Undifferentiated, warrantless scooping up of every electronic emmission.
"Worse than the Patriot Act"

the ACLU sent me the following:

American Civil Liberties Union
Dick Cheney Wants Access to Your Email
http://ga3.org/ct/cdanfkE1gXm8/
*********************************

Dear Friend,

It's true. Dick Cheney is pushing Congress to allow the government to access Americans' conversations and emails without getting an individualized warrant.

The ACLU has been fighting in the courts and on Capitol Hill to halt the Bush administration's secret program of warrantless domestic spying. Just last month, we won a tremendous victory when the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan declared the National Security Agency program unconstitutional and called for an immediate halt to this abuse of presidential power.

Stand with us today and take action to protect your privacy and the rule of law.
http://ga3.org/ct/cdanfkE1gXm8/

Even as this important civil liberties victory works its way through the courts, the White House is playing politics with our privacy to bolster their numbers and appear "tough on terrorism." And now the Bush administration's allies in Congress are scrambling to find ways to keep their illegal activities moving forward with two bills drafted under Dick Cheney's supervision.

The bills -- scheduled for debate in Congress this week -- would expand the president's power, and allow for new ways to invade your privacy. Now is the time to tell Congress to protect your privacy and the rule of law.
http://ga3.org/ct/cdanfkE1gXm8/

The Cheney legislation is characterized by some as "surveillance we can live with," but it would vastly expand the government's power to search and spy on Americans without any individualized judicial check. It would even set government spies loose on any email you send if the government does not know where all the recipients are physically located.

We cannot allow our homes, cell phone records and email inboxes to be exposed to new kinds of government spying that are currently completely illegal. But we have a chance to stop these bills this week, before White House pressure drives them to a speedy vote.

The Cheney bills are worse than the powers ceded to the government by the Patriot Act, and would write into law what is now the administration's belief that the president can wiretap any American he wants without any check required by the Fourth Amendment or without any meaningful check to protect individual rights. If these bills pass, nothing will prevent government agents from unilaterally targeting Americans for indefinite secret surveillance without cause. That's not America; with your help, we will ensure these bills do not pass. Please take action today to protect your privacy and the rule of law.
http://ga3.org/ct/cdanfkE1gXm8/

Your voice is critical right now. Please take action today.

Sincerely,
Anthony D. Romero
Executive Director
American Civil Liberties Union

1. My friend, just before she left for China: Don't mention bush in any email
or they will shut down my computer.

Guess the same situation will greet her on her return to the states.

Cheney has to be taken from power. There is no America as long as he gets a say in anything.

Hope the good guy spooks in the civil war for America have him snared.

11. China monitors all email communication, I gather.
When a colleague received a message from stateside daughter about some news story re bush last summer- internet went POOF! and that computer no longer able to get online in China.

Guess they are fussy about what gets shared via the net. Something not unlike what the neocons are trying to pull (in stages) here in the US, under the guise of 'protecting the children from online predators'

The US Congress recently passed a bill which will restrict a lot of internet sites and message boards from being accessed by computers in rural libraries. They gotta keep the heartland in the dark- rural communities are getting truth and asking a lot of questions the GOP doesn't want to answer.

What IS in China re censorship and the internet, is in the works for us in America. Count on it.

4. PGP and custom encryption algorithms
Oh, wait. Data encryption technology is classified as "munitions" and posession of secure encryption methods can be prosecuted. Seriously.

White House: Proposal Won't Change Status Of Guantanamo

WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- The status of detainees now held at Guantanamo Bay won't be changed by legislation the White House plans to send to Congress on new rules for military trials of suspected terrorists, White House spokesman Tony Snow said Wednesday.

President George W. Bush is expected to detail the administration's plan in a speech at 1:45 p.m. EDT, remarks that Snow said will include "significant news." However, "do not expect there to be dramatic changes in status," he said.

"It does not include a change of status for Guantanamo," Snow said. "This is not a change of status in terms of change in operational procedures."

The White House effort to clarify the treatment of "enemy combatants" follows the Supreme Court's June decision that the proposed tribunals would violate international law. Since then, the White House has been working with lawmakers to design a system that meets the court's standards.

6. and this:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14689359 /

WASHINGTON - President Bush plans to unveil proposed legislation Wednesday to set a structure for conducting trials of foreign terrorism suspects held at Guantanamo Bay, White House officials said.

The Supreme Court in June rejected as illegal the military tribunal system set up by the Bush administration to try Guantanamo prisoners, most of whom were captured in Afghanistan.

The court said the tribunals -- an alternative legal system -- lacked congressional authorization and did not meet U.S. military or international justice standards.

White House spokesman Tony Snow said the speech will discuss the proposed legislation but also touch on broad issues about how the United States should handle terrorism suspects. "It raises the question, how do you operate, how do you conduct appropriate detention and justice exercises in the wake of the

13. Let 'em craft all the legislation they want
It still won't make it Constitutional. They could enact a bill of attainder too, but it wouldn't be Constitutional.

What are needed are more judges like the one in Detroit. More decisions like the recent Hamdi decision from the Supes. Not more legislation.
