A man claims he was assaulted while protesting Governor Sebelius during her debate with Republican gubernatorial nominee Jim Barnett at the State Fair.

The man and another protester were wearing cockroach costumes bearing the governor's face. They handed out cards saying cockroaches at abortion clinics loved Sebelius because she vetoed
an abortion clinic inspections bill.

The Kansas Highway Patrol said a report is to be turned over to the Reno County District Attorney's Office tomorrow for possible charges.

The protester said he lives in south-central Kansas but did not give his name.

Debate protesters try to bug governor

Assault charges could be filed this week in Reno County District Court stemming from an audience altercation at the gubernatorial debate Saturday at the Kansas State Fairgrounds.

The injured man was a political protester wearing a cockroach costume. He did not require medical treatment at the scene, although the Kansas Highway Patrol offered to supply a Band-Aid. Also, the Highway Patrol responded to the man's desire that a report be written so formal charges could be pressed.

Kansas Highway Patrol Capt. Alan Stoecklein declined Saturday to release the names of the two men involved, because no one has been charged.

Stoecklein said the report would be submitted Monday to District Attorney Keith Schroeder's office.

"This was a minor assault, so it would be a misdemeanor," Stoecklein said, if Schroeder decided to file charges at all.

The man injured in the incident lives in south-central Kansas. Although he refused to tell The News his name, he willingly lifted his gray-flecked hair to show the tear in his skin on his head.

He said a man ripped at his mask, and a paper clip or staple was shoved into his head.

2. Well trained cockroaches
He wanted a report to be written so formal charges could be pressed. This republican is an embarrassment to cockroaches everywhere.

Poor little cockroach, mean old Kathleen don't want conservative maggots getting into clinics via clandestine operations. It must suck being a rove trained cockroach.

First debate focuses on economy’s health

Hutchinson — Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and Republican challenger Jim Barnett drew starkly different pictures of the Kansas economy Saturday in their first debate ahead of November’s election.

Sharing a stage at the Kansas State Fair, the Democratic incumbent and the GOP state senator from Emporia also clashed on school finance and traded some personal barbs.

Supporters of Sebelius outnumbered Barnett’s backers in an audience of more than 2,000, with the governor’s crowd chanting “four more years” and drowning out Barnett with boos at times.

Also on hand were two abortion opponents in cockroach costumes and Sebelius masks pretending to be the governor’s campaign mascot. The display was meant to bring attention to allegedly unsanitary conditions at abortion clinics — a connection few in the crowd seemed to understand.

“You have to ask yourself: Are we better off today than we were four years ago?” Sebelius, elected to her first term in 2002, told the audience.

“Our economy was struggling,” she added. “We had a billion-dollar deficit. Our schools had been neglected for years by the Legislature. And our health and safety concerns had been overlooked.”

4. I've read that several prominent Kansas GOPers have flipped to the Dems.
I think there is quite a bit of resentment among the moderate Republicans in Kansas , especially in upscale Johnson County.
