Jose Vazquez of Little Havana is the type of voter the South Florida AFL-CIO had hoped to find during their get-out-the-vote effort on Saturday.
A longtime Miami-Dade County School Board employee, Vazquez worries about the rising cost of homeowners insurance.
He voted to reelect President Bush in 2004, but 52-year-old Vazquez maintains that he is devoted to no political party.
''I go with whichever I think is the best candidate,'' he said.
Vazquez and other union workers -- both active and retired -- were on the list of voters sought by more than 150 members of the South Florida AFL-CIO, part of a statewide campaign to garner support for Democrat U.S. Rep. Jim Davis in his race against GOP Attorney General Charlie Crist to become the state's next governor.
The AFL-CIO is embarking on the same get-out-the-vote effort nationwide, targeting 21 governor's races, 15 Senate races and 50 House races before this November's midterm elections.
