Canadians color their hands red in protest of Rice's visit

Close to 100 protesters filled the street in front of the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic to protest Rice's visit to Halifax.

Many protesters dipped their hands in red paint to symbolize blood on their hands as they chanted "Condi go home."

The peace coalition has questioned the motivation for Rice's visit, dismissing it as part of a public relations campaign meant to boost support for the military mission in Afghanistan.

"We have quite strong feelings against the invasion of Iraq and the Canadian involvement in Afghanistan, and I think there's not enough discussion why there's a war in Afghanistan," said Anne Webb, who brought her two young sons to the protest.

4. What a good idea! Red = life blood or death blood? There is only

one answer if we're talking PNAC. Hands = excellent symbolism.

I am consumed in thoughts of death. Yesterday was way too much for me. The hypocrisy of this regime honoring these precious people - people they didn't protect, brothers and sisters whose statistics are mounting at alarming rates in Iraq, Lebanon, Afghanistan, and the people who weren't even mentioned yesterday - people who are sick in their lungs, immune systems, and sick in the heart because they are going to be handicapped - even in caring for children, if they survive.

Where is the honor day for these people. Some of them have been nearly dead and ask if you've heard any statistic of the number who have died from the chemical after-affects? Both in New York, Lebanon, and Iraq.

We are the most hypocritical people who have ever touched this earth.

Hooray for the Canadians having the guts to confront Mz Liar! When will enough people come to reality in this country? When will leaders in this country get smart?

16. Hell, we had 7000 out there when Chimpy was here.
Biggest demo in the city's history--one of the police told a friend of mine, "We need a good turnout here--get the message across." :toast:

7. Oh Dear God....that's a pretty harsh indictment....and I hope she see's
or hears reports of it even thought she lives in a bubble. Their hands all drip with blood. Yet, they never seem to show any signs of the effects of it. But then, there were those stories about vampires who need the fix of blood to thrive.

9. Her security was ridiculous
As I mentioned in another thread, she had more security types surrounding her than the entire G-7 leadership did when they were in town about a decade back. It was insane.

Great impression to give while you're arguing that you're making the world safe.

13. paranoia, or a response to their shitty policies?
I don't often wish harm on others, even on the dumb princess of darkness and incompetance herself. But, given just how wrong-headed and foolish, fatal, and futile, their ideas have been, how deadly, destructive and dastardly, how moronic, miserable and myopic, I really can understand why she needs a private army to protect herself from real people.

Can anyone imagine Madeline Albright needing such security in Canada? IN CANADA, for cripes sake?

15. Not particularly, no - or the president, for that matter
Clinton's security when he's in town seems to be his car, a handful of bikes, the standard pile of municipal cops/rooftop snipers, and some really, really innocuous Secret Service types.

It kinda boggles me a bit too, because Bush was in Halifax in late '04 and I'm pretty sure he had less security. Then again, he was airlifted in and out, but...

12. You know those stupid car ribbons?
First, I love Canada for making that statement.

Second, and completely irrelevant is the fact that in our household, we have a standing tradition of drinking "To Canada" at every opportunity. I don't remember how or why it started.

And finally, the red hand is a great symbol for Progressives to grab on to (hee, hee). A red handprint, one red glove, a red hand car magnet (okay, but I needed a third thing for sentence structure)--this is a powerful symbol, as in "caught red handed."

??
