Er uh we have an election in less than 2 months, STOP THE INFIGHTING |
|
Edited on Sun Sep-17-06 08:38 PM by wndycty
Folks I'm a little upset about some of the negativity floating around DU tonight. As we move forward from the primaries and look to the general election in less than two months we need to come together and fight the good fight. I can care less who gets credit for our victories in November, this election is not about Howard Dean, Rahm Emanuel or Chuck Schumer, its about taking back one or both of the chambers of Congress, retaining and picking up Governorships and control of legislatures throughout the country.
Rahm and the DCCC gave us Tammy Duckworth in the 6th CD of Illinois, but if she wins its a Democratic victory.
Jim Dean and DFA put Ned Lamont over the top, but if he wins its a Democratic victory.
Rahm and Howard Dean have a falling out and it appears there is now a truce, they are moving forward (at least publicly) so lets all move forward.
There is a thread tonight bitching about who is getting credit for raising more money, there is another complaining that Newsweek is praising Rahm while dissing Dean and yet another in which some posters (in response to the news that Bill Clinton is helpling the DSCC) are talking about withholding money from the DSCC for a myriad of reasons, including one poster who will not donate to the DSCC until Bill Clinton sues ABC for "Path to 9/11."
What? Are we nuts?
Folks its time to put aside all our petty bickering and whining and come together to win in November. Just remember if you are really passionate about fighting and dissing other Democrats you will have primaries in 2008 to do so.

But screaming and fighting is so much more fun! And we don't actually have to do anything that would make people doubt how hip we are, like govern. Also see the Plan to Elect Al Gore in 2008. --p!

Pay less attention to who I'm backing (may switch to Obama) and more attention to when I think we should care about 2008.

I've used the "TRAITOR! WHORE!" subject line probably a hundred times -- to lampoon the incendiaries who "absolutely won't vote Democratic until X and Y and Z and maybe even A through W."
I don't really care a whole lot who you're backing as long as it's a Democrat. Fact is, I think that most Democrats are either Good or Excellent. We need to make not just a party-wide push, but an ideological one. Anything Democratic, and anything Left of center, will be okay. Fine tuning can happen later.
Fractiousness destroyed the Democratic Party in the 1970s, just at the time when we could have seized power from the post-Watergate "moderate" Republican party. Instead, the more conservative Republicans stepped into that power vacuum, and the rest has been history -- 21 years of corrupt Republican presidents and twelve years of crippled Democratic ones.

7. As the poster who will not donate to DSCC as a result of Big Dogs request |
|
UNLESS he starts a lawsuit against the Path to 9/11 - let me explain.
I send money to candidates I believe in individually. I have supported Byrd, Lamont, Kucinich and many others. BUT I will NOT send money to DSCC, or DLC because their candidates frequently do not support things I believe in such as opposition to cluster bombs or the Iraq war.
I send my hard earned dollars to support candidates who support the things I believe in.

. . .would not have sent money to the DSCC anyway, you were using his letter as your personal soapbox to garner support for a potential lawsuit (which I would support), but you were never going to give to the DSCC anyway.

He has sent out a letter asking me to send money, so if he sues (which I believe NEEDS to be done in order to stop this schlock from being taught in schools) then I will gladly do as he asks and send money.

Face it - he and the Clinton Foundation spoke up as did Albright and Berger - to do anything LESS than suing is to admit the dems are all talk no walk - just like the repukes. bush TALKS freedom and compassion and walks gulags and torture.
Until Dems are willing to take on repukes and NOT BACK DOWN, why should anyone believe they have the courage to lead?
I want our Dems to show some SPINE. Stand tall and speak the truth with strength and conviction. Don't be cowed, don't apologize. Speak the truth, and then we will win.
It is when our reps cringe, cower and apologize for speaking the truth that we lose.

8. K&R!! This is extremely important! |
|
Out here in California, Schwarzenegger looks like he will easily win another 4 years because too many Democrats won't get behind Angelides! If we want to move the country away from the far right, we have to defeat the Republicans! To do that, we need to vote for Democrats in the general election. The primaries are over. It wouldn't matter if the Democratic nominee for President in 2008 was Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, Dennis Kucinich, Howard Dean, Joe Lieberman, Mark Warner, Russ Feingold, Wesley Clark, John Edwards, Al Gore, Jimmy Carter, Maxine Waters, Barack Obama, Barbara Boxer, or Dianne Feinstein...I WILL BE VOTING DEMOCRATIC FOR PRESIDENT IN 08!!

And I think no party should win when they say untrue things about each other.
This is amazing. It is not anyone person. It is about telling the truth.
Unity before truth you say?.
Dean has been called a poor fundraiser at least 3 times this week, and been tsked tsked about party leaders....he raised 15 million more, and deserves credit.
But the truth gets one rec...unity without truth get 9 already.
Kind of sad.

while its been a little bumpy for some, reclaiming our identity as the Democratic party is definitely a worthwhile fight and doesn't subtract from the effort. In fact, continuing to pretend that there is something inherently wrong with being a Democrat and that we should pretend to be something different only weakens us.
Standing up for the Democratic Party is helping us win and we should continue to do so.

22. If there was one omnipresent Democratic Identity, you'd have a point |
|
but I fear we are at loggerheads over that.
One DUer wants an immediate pullout of Iraq, another wants to keep a military presence there.
One DUer thinks all religion is evil, another preaches tolerance to all ways of faith.
One DUer wants a hard line on gun regulations, another is an NRA member.
One DUer thinks Clintonian Liberalism is the way to stay the course, another thinks we need a radical departure toward a more Progressive ideology.
Democrats and Liberals are traditionally people of very diverses ideas. beliefs and passions. To tell you the truth, it's amazing to me that we can get as close as we have. Perhaps this aggrivating infighting, which is evidence of many divisions among us, has been productive in revealing what we have to fix before we can be a stronger power.
I would never trade our internal scrappiness for the GOP neo-Stalinist lockstep way. Our diversity is our strength, if only we can figure out how to harness it.

|
I agree with you on most every point. But I read the OP's point to mean that we shouldn't be attacking and insulting each other, especially in public, so close to an election.
There's a way to disagree emphatically without calling the person you disagree with names like "sellout" or "DINO" or "freeper troll" or the like. There's a way to fight passionately for your own position without stamping your feet and threatening to leave the party if you don't get your way.
That's the kind of behavior that has always irked me, anyway. Especially when we're in a real national state of emergency and we need to fight for every bit of improvement in our situation we can get, even if it's still far short of the ideal.

From this point on, my time goes to candidates.
I'll resume participating in the circular firing squad and the negativities after the elections. At that point, we can fight with each other till there's no one left standing......Cause in a minute, it ain't gonna matter what part of the Democratic party is doing what....cause it will the end of it. If, as bad as Georgie is....we can't win a majority after 12 years out of congressional power....then I fear that all is lost anyways.

The hate some on DU have for the Democrats that I prefer is just to profound for them to give up and for me to ignore. Until Skinner enacts a moratorium on "Democrat bashing," I'll continue to sling it back in their faces. on edit: Example: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=2833855&mesg_id=2834064

...there's no sense in 'in' fighting. It's too late for that now anyway. The 'new' Democrats got what they wanted. They intentionally fractured the party and sold it to the highest bidder. They joined with certain elements of the RWing (Neocons) to neutralize what remained of the 'liberal' influence in the party.
(There are still a few high-profile liberals and progressives...but they have no power within the party).
The Democratic party as we knew it no longer exists. That's why the Right and their presidential puppet have been able to attain so much power and 'progress' for the GOP. Without a viable opposition...they can do about anything they want.
The 'new' Democrats pop up now and then to remind you to just shut up and vote for anyone with a (D) after their name...no matter how far they've strayed from the party that dominated both houses for over four decades. Shhh. Be quiet. Don't voice your concerns. It won't do you any good anyway. The Democratic party no longer belongs to the people. The DLC owns the deed.
