Congress and the White House need to hear your voice on matters that cut to the core of who we are as a nation.

In an extremely rare lobbying visit to Capitol Hill, President Bush has requested legislation that would authorize indefinite detention, unfair trials and immunity for torture and cruel treatment.

This is a nation of laws – WE MUST KEEP IT THAT WAY!

Help PFAW send 25,000 messages to Congress and the White House this week, demanding that any legislation passed preserve basic standards of justice and due process, and respect precedents laid down by our Supreme Court.

The President’s push comes in the form of legislation that the White House has introduced in Congress: Senate Bill 3861. This bill would narrowly define U.S. compliance with the Geneva Conventions, allow the use of classified evidence against combatants without offering such evidence to combatants for review or rebuttal, and admit evidence at trial obtained by coercive means.

The President has gone too far, and even prominent Republicans – individuals highly respected within the President’s party – are objecting strenuously. This chorus includes Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), Sen. John Warner (R-VA), Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), and General Colin Powell, who wrote in a letter to Sen. McCain, “the world is beginning to doubt the moral basis of our fight against terrorism.”

The White House’s position has weakened over the weekend and now is the time to drive home to our officials the fact that patriotism goes hand-in-hand with the Constitution and the rule of law.

This is a nation of laws – KEEP IT THAT WAY!

Once you have signed the statement and added your own point of view, then get fellow constituents in your congressional district and state to amplify the message to Rep. Vacant, Sen. Hutchison, Sen. Cornyn and the White House.

Remember, even if your members of Congress are advocates for the rule of law, public outcry gives them the encouragement to speak even more forthrightly.

2. Why Worry? The Brave Congressional Democrats Have Got Your Back!
They'll use every tool at their disposal to ensure that Americans retain their basic civil liberties, and that America will live up to its obligations of providing basic human rights to combatants.

Just think of all the progress they've made on getting rid of Rumsfeld - you can sleep well tonight...
