You know who else smells a change in the air? WALLMART!!
...This morning Wallmart announced a plan to sell generic drugs (starting in Florida) for just $4. Hmm...and then I remember last month's plan to convert millions of conventional bulbs across the country to compact fluorescents. Here's the Walmart we all know and hate making two major moves (energy conservation, health care) that will actually help both individual consumers and the country as a whole. Some great tipping point has been reached, but WHICH one??? Several possibilities avail. It could be so simple as planning to hold market share and sales by reducing non-discretionary budget costs for consumers. It could be a simple PR move-smart, and a good counter to ongoing bad publicity. Or, could they smell a democratic swing in the year and be looking to stop a regulatory backlash? Most frighteningly it could be driven by their Chinese suppliers and "partners" trying to hold the American consumer's head above water til the last possible moment. I don't know the cause, but sometime in the last 2 months-something big tipped...

1. Do not mistake this
for a genuine change on the part of WalMart to become more responsible. They simply do whatever they can to move to the future in which there are no other stores but WalMart.

4. Bottom line.
Compact flourescents save money. Period. So Wal-Mart uses them. As for the pharmacies, they're only doing to the drug industry what they've been doing to every other industry that used to make fine quality products in the USA.

5. I hate flourescents
They give me a headache, they make you look old and ugly, colors are not the same as daylight, everything is harsher

3. Maybe they're making use of their design for a Vancouver store
Vancouver made Wal-Mart come up with a "greener" design on which they worked for two years. (The deal fell through.)

After spending two years on his design, Busby says, "there's nothing like this in North America."
His "green" design will allow the Wal-Mart store to use one-third of the energy it takes to run a regular store. Windmills generate power and underground wells will heat and cool the building. Skylights will replace lamps in the store.

"There will be no lights on during the daytime all year. That saves a lot of energy."
