7. My take on this...
The right wingers want the Clintons to come out and call Wes Clark a liar. They think that would be the final nail in the coffin.

8. It's actually a positive for Clark
Shows the type of BS (IF the report is true) Clark had to endure to bring things to a successful and proper conclusion (which he did).

Not that those who have eyes but cannot see, ears oblivious to all but the sound of their own drumbeat, and minds too closed to care, will notice.

14. "There were those in the White Hous"
that's what it says. Big fucking deal. Why does this concern Drudge except as a way to simultaneously smear Clark and Clinton/Gore?

BTW, I like the way Clark says that--"those in the White House" is a non-specific appellation that could mean Sen. Clinton or the White House spokesman or Gore's chief of stff. It's a non-utterance.

Go away Drudge.

18. This isn't a smear of Clark
It shows the political pressure General Clark was facing, but he overcame and persevered anyway. This makes Clark look good.

Drudge's agenda? He wants the primaries to stay a horse race!

21. Drudge's "scoop" is just a story he stole from the Washington Post
Top Clinton administration officials wanted to end the Kosovo war abruptly in the summer of 1999 -- at almost any cost -- because Al Gore's presidential campaign was about to kick off, former NATO commander Gen. Wesley Clark says in his official papers, the WASHINGTON POST is set to report in Saturday editions, according to newsroom sources...

'There were those in the White House who said, 'Hey, look, you gotta finish the bombing before the Fourth of July weekend. That's the start of the next presidential campaign season, so stop it. It doesn't matter what you do, just turn it off. You don't have to win this thing, let it lie...' MORE///

20. Where's the Clark smear?
From what I read, it sounds like Drudge is trying to counter Democratic criticisms of Bush's politically-motivated date for turning Iraq back over to the Iraqis (june), by claiming that Clinton/Gore tried doing the same to better Gore's campaign prospects.
Sandy Berger, former national security adviser to President Clinton and a Clark friend, tells the paper any implication that the White House was prepared to hurry the end of the war for political reasons was 'categorically and completely false.'
Yet another retreat to the "buck stops there" mantra of Bush and the misguided right-wing:

"Clinton did it."

22. It is not a smear of Clark, it is a smear of Clinton and Gore
If it is proven true it makes Clark look good. Unless the idea is to provoke a battle between Clinton and Clark--which they are both to smart to fall into.

24. Uhh, where's the smear? Jeeze, this article just makes me like him
better. Sort of like Harry Truman played by Jimmy Cagney.

Isn't it time we had a real human being in office instead of a carefully prepared, primped and polished political poseur? (sorry for the French word but I had some alliteration going there and I couldn't let it go).

25. I agree, Mike
I still don't think I understand the role of the Russians in this narrative, though. It's something people from the left and the right use to attack him and I am still unclear about the situation. Perhaps someone can explain it to me!

26. From what I've read
It was something of a rogue unit acting without orders (or the Russian government made that pretense). The troops were moving from Bosnia to Kosovo, then under NATO occupation, to occupy Pristina Airfield and partition off a Russian-controlled sector in Kosovo. Apparently, they were colluding with the Serbs. Madeleine Albright spoke with the Russians and confirmed they had not issued orders, but later the Russians seemed to decide they would take a sector now that they were there. The British General Jackson's remark, "I won't start WWII for you," is what is repeated endlessly. Clark had ordered Jackson to block the airfield runways and Jackson objected based on his mission, as he saw it, as peacekeeping. Gen. Jackson was under Clark's jurisdiction as SACEUR. Clark spoke with Jackson's superior in Britain and then told Jackson he would have to resign if he didn't follow orders and that was that. Jackson has since acknowledged he overreacted and the whole thing had been blown out of proportion. I also saw Jamie Rubin tell this story at a press conference on C-Span.

31. that is hardly a smoking gun
The article drudge links you to also says:
"Clark's papers include a warm letter from William S. Cohen, the secretary of defense at the time, praising the general for his efforts during the crisis. But Cohen, who resented Clark's independent attitudes, forced him out of the job months before Clark intended to leave. "
Clark is not afraid to be right, never has been.
Also who is this NATO historian (no names provided) and there are several Clark quotes that have no backup links what so ever.
About what you'd expect from Drudge.
