Can the new detainee/torture/habeas corpus bill be used as a draft? |
|
I mean, can the gummint round up anyone and ship 'em off to Asia in the military?
Can people who might be subpoenaed to testify against WH royals be rounded up and kept on ice (in posh surroundings, of course) until the *problems* blow over?
I know the bill will be used to cover GWB's butt and will be used to suppress our Freedom of Speech and Freedom to Assemble so as to eliminate dissent. I was just wondering how else it would be used.

A draft is a draft. This bill is something else entirely.
Which isn't to say that a draft act might not be passed, but I'm not willing to go out on a limb and make predictions. People have been expecting a draft any day now, ever since the run-up to the current occupation, and it hasn't happened yet. I'm not entirely sure why, although 4 reasons come to mind: 1) The military itself hates the idea. An all-volunteer army is better. 2) Despite failing to meet recruiting goals at various times, the enlistment and retention rates have been sufficient to maintain our forces. 3) There are still National Guard troops available to call up. 4) (Which may actually be the most important) I think they may be afraid to have a draft, fearing that this is the one thing that would cause massive electoral revolt.

2. But can it be used to get more bodies into the military? I'm not |
|
asking if it's preferable, just if it's possible.
Thanks for the response.
