WES CLARK- Army of One helps gain local headlines for “D” candidates!
Edited on Sat Sep-30-06 04:37 PM by FrenchieCat
Wes Clark has got to be one of the hardest working patriot during campaign 2006!
Call it sweat equity if you will, but the General is working his strategy by doing what he can, where it counts and generating headlines as he goes from state to state; district to district, for Democratic candidates in those areas that need a boost for our Democratic candidates in close races needed to win to regain both houses.
Detailed schedule here! http://www.awesclarkdemocrat.com/2006/09/who_can_keep_up_with_wes_clark.htm

The press snipets below DO NOT INCLUDE his work LAST WEEK campaigning with Clare McCatskill in Missouri , his join press phone conference with Jim Webb in Virginia , his appearance in Texas with at a private fundraiser for Will Pryor TX-32
or his editorial in the International Edition of Newsweek - http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14973488/site/newsweek/
or his ongoing work on Darfur.

In addition, Wes Clark is an advisor http://www.votevets.org/, an organization that has put out a devastating ad aimed at sitting vunerable senators Allen, Santorum and Burns. See that ad here: http://www.ifilms.tv/votevetsweb/burns.html

Below is a sample of the press Wes Clark has help generate in local and statewide media publications for Democratic candidates this past week.

This may be Odd...but Fox News hasn't had a General Wes Clark appearance since 9/15/06 -
Now, why could that be?

CLIFTON HEIGHTS -- Former NATO commander Wesley Clark appeared at an American Legion Friday to endorse Democratic congressional candidate Joseph Sestak and urge his supporters not to cede any ground to Republicans on national security issues.

"We’re not going to duck the security issue as Democrats. We’re going to take the Republicans on head-on," said Clark, a retired four-star Army general who commanded NATO forces during the Kosovo conflict.

Poll shows 7th District a dead heat
Special to the Local News
09/30/2006
The first nonpartisan poll conducted in the 7th Congressional District shows U.S. Rep. Curt Weldon and Democrat Joseph Sestak locked in a statistical dead heat, with less than 40 percent of registered voters believing the Republican incumbent deserves re-election.
Snip
Weldon received more than $200,000 Monday at a Springfield Country Club fundraiser with former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge. Sestak was expected to get some extra cash Friday when Wesley Clark, a retired NATO commander and 2004 Democratic presidential candidate, visited the American Legion in Clifton Heights. The books close today on the quarterly campaign finance reports.

Iraq policy comes to fore in Senate race
Pederson ad raises heat on Kyl's war stance
By Josh Brodesky arizona daily star Tucson, Arizona | Published: 09.30.2006
Such was the case this week, when Pederson released an ad critical of the handling of the war in Iraq, likening it to "another Vietnam." As the commercial hit airwaves, Pederson hit the campaign trail with retired Army Gen. Wesley Clark, blistering Kyl and the Bush administration for the handling of the war.
The one-two punch brought focus to an issue that has often taken a back seat to illegal immigration this election cycle.

Clark to Dems: Speak out on Iraq
By Paul Giblin, Tribune September 28, 2006
The 3 1 /2-year-old war has placed the United States in danger, Clark said at the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union Hall in Phoenix.

“We’re on the precipice of events spinning out of control as a result of these strategic mistakes and bad leadership of that gang in Washington,” he said.

Since the United States invaded Iraq, the geopolitical situation in the Middle East has become less stable, Clark said.

More than 2,700 military men and woman have been killed and thousands more have been injured in the war; Iraq is moving toward civil war; Iran has gained nuclear capability; Israel and Palestinians in Lebanon have been at war; Afghanistan is “disintegrating” and the terrorist responsible for the Sept. 11 attacks, Osama bin Laden, still is on the loose, he said.

Former NATO chief blasts Bush policies during Phoenix visit
Former NATO Supreme Commander and 2004 Democratic presidential candidate Wesley Clark blasted President Bush on the Iraq War and Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks when he was in town Wednesday to support Congressional candidate Harry Mitchell and Senate hopeful Jim Pederson.
Pederson is taking on Republican Sen. Jon Kyl and Mitchell, former Tempe mayor and Democratic state senator, is challenging Republican Scottsdale Congressman J.D. Hayworth in the November election.
Hayworth has clashed with some business interests on the immigration front but has fans in the business community who like his support of tax cuts and free trade.
Clark faulted the Bush administration for the 9/11 attacks and said the Iraq War is a failure

Clark: Bush 'derelict in his duty'
Former NATO chief speaks at 'family day'

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Former NATO commander Wesley Clark told Kentucky Democrats yesterday that President Bush has been "derelict in his duty as commander in chief."
Speaking to a gathering at the Kentucky Democratic Party's second annual "family day" event in Frankfort, Clark said former President Bill Clinton warned Bush personally during the presidential transition about Osama bin Laden.
After starting with a campaign stop in Northern Kentucky last night, Clark and party leaders have stops planned today in Campbellsville, Hopkinsville, Paducah, Owensboro and Brandenburg.
snip
Kentucky Democratic Party Chairman Jerry Lundergan said he was holding a private dinner fundraiser last night for Clark's political action committee, which funds his campaign activities on behalf of Democrats.
State Rep. Derrick Graham, D-Frankfort, said Clark would be an asset for local candidates because he's like "down-home" Kentuckians who believe in fighting for working people.

Clark stumps for Democrats in western Kentucky
By GREG TRAVIS
Staff Writer

PADUCAH, Ky. - Gen. Wesley Clark, a highly-decorated veteran, former NATO Supreme Allied Commander and former Democratic presidential candidate, brought his “Kentucky Candidate Tour” to Paducah Monday afternoon. Clark was stumping throughout the Commonwealth for House and Senate candidates while spreading his message that the Democratic grassroots organizations can change the face of America.

Clark: Dems offer leadership
WILDER - Retired Gen. Wes Clark, a potential Democratic presidential candidate in 2008, was in Campbell County on Sunday night trying to help turn a red state blue.
Clark, former commander of NATO, was featured speaker at a Democratic rally that attracted a boisterous crowd of more than 200 to the Wilder Civic Center.
Drawing on his credentials as a military leader of 34 years, Clark criticized President Bush's leadership and ability, saying Iraq "is a war we didn't need to fight."

The rally was mainly on behalf of three Northern Kentucky Democrats running for Statehouse seats:
Linda Klembara of Fort Thomas, who is running against Rep. Joe Fischer, R-Fort Thomas, in the 68th House District.
Randy Blankenship of Erlanger, who is running against Republican Adam Koenig, also of Erlanger and a member of the Kenton County Fiscal Court, in the 69th District.
David Ryan of Florence, who is running against Republican Sal Santoro of Florence in the 60th House District race.

1. Wes will not be on Fox for at least two weeks and probably more
Wes is off Fox for the next few weeks and probably until after the election because Fox is shilling for Bush during the run up to the election.
They want the Republicans to maintain control and they can't have the sane and smart
voice of General Clark sounding like an adult among children.

By the way, I loved your review.

I had the pleasure of hearing General Clark speak yesterday for Joe Sestak in Delaware County PA.

3. Very Kewl on your attendance at Joe Sestak's gathering
featuring Wes! Did you write a review about it?

I figured that Wes wasn't on FOX because it "interfered" with the Fox message.....and they know it.

I always thought that was brilliant strategy for him to be on that particular channel so that he could reach those that he is now courting on behalf of Democrats in those areas we need to convert a few in order to replace Republican seats with Democratic ones!

2. When he said "take the hill" he meant it.
And he's leading the charge. Although the visited in dated (Aug.) Wes did go to Florida for Tim Mahoney before it became "cool."

I'd thought about including some snark. You know, something about how Wes Clark wasn't spending his weekends in NH & Iowa, but then I decided it was better to stick with the OP. Really, the General has been on the road for Democrats for days and days now. For that I'm thankful. He is our strongest voice against this war even in red states.

6. Virginia?
Don't know...but I hope that he gets back there again. Webb and Clark go back a long way.

Anyway, Wes will be in CA for Charlie Brown this week, which tells me that he will also be doing his gig at UCLA. Then 3 days in Alabama.

Curious about the absense of fox. Although I can't imagine how he'd fit it in. IIRC, the General was not in the country for part of September. We do know, he's now lost several tubes of toothpaste in bush's effort to keep us safe from Four Star Generals.

BTW, the Tester event sounded like a hoot. Wes was on! He was doing impressions, and rallying the troops.

11. how's that?
Wes was in the military for 38 years! It was the title of one of his ops! http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/features/2001/0209.clark.html

Wes Clark has generated headlines for candidates in the local press this past week that are numerous .....by physically going to places that not so many high named Dems have gone on his own dime.

If Senator Kerry has gone to Kentucky, Arizona, Texas, and Montana this past week and has generated numerous positive news stories for Dems running in the local papers, then you should start a thread and call it what you'd like....and I'll simply come in there and Say...Hey, That's Great!

Here, John Kerry is touted for his accomplishment in the senate, and I'm in that thread......and I don't see me having nothing to say about John Kerry's accomplishment other than some snarky comment! http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=2856333&mesg_id=2856333

Better or worse with another year of shrub?

Clark will run if the country needs his expertise and experience in international affairs, which is to say...quite likely.

A Wesley Clark presidency would be a gift to the world. There is simply no one else in his league when it comes to working with the international community and restoring America's credibility on the world stage.

19. I just saw
Wes with Joe Sestak last night and someone asked him about 2008...He said it was a nice question but now that it was asked, he wanted everyone to forget about it and focus on 2006 and getting people like Sestak elected....He knows how important it is to get back at least one house of Congress this year and until we do that, he's not even going to think about 2008...I know there are other 2008 hopefuls who seem to be focused on 2006 only so much as it will help them in '08...but Wes is not one of those. You only need to see him speak about the importance of the elections this year to know that. For him, it's about country before personal ambitions...and he's REALLY worred about the future of this country....as well we all should be.

Edited on Sat Sep-30-06 09:26 PM by Wesin04
His travels for Democrats have been incredible! No other Democrat, bar none, has pounded the pavement, put in the miles (and miles and miles) to turn this country around more than General Clark. He draws the crowds and gets the press for the candidates no matter where they are running, but Frenchie, until you put it all together in this post, it was hard to grasp just what he's done for his country and his party. He has taken the issues straight to BushCo with more force and more credibility than any other potential '08 candidate could ever do. We need his voice to stay strong so the wisdom and clarity of thought come through. Great post, Frenchie. General Clark sir...

18. Clark is a FORCE MULTIPLIER
His incredible energy makes each appearance an 'event'. Along with Wes's support comes a cadre of Clarkies to work in the trenches. From Kentucky to Arizona to Montana to Virginia to California, there are Clarkies working at every level to get 06 candidates elected.

It's not a coincidence that Nancy Pelsoi and Rahm Emanuel requested his help to combat Bush's appearance for Charlie Brown's opponent in California on Tuesday.

I was wondering if Wes had pushed for that event. So, was it the other way around? Two things: 1) there are 2 dates showing...which is correct? 2) this event looks as if will bring in big bucks. I certainly hope so.

21. ***UPDATE!****

Terror report brings Iraq to forefront for Kyl, Pederson

Robbie Sherwood
The Arizona Republic
Sept. 30, 2006 12:00 AM

Now, Pederson has put the war on terror front and center, with a new ad blitz reminding voters that Osama bin Laden remains free and calling the Iraq war "another Vietnam." And Kyl, in a seeming shift from an administration stance that has downplayed a need for more soldiers, has acknowledged that Iraq will require more troops to achieve victory.
snip
Top national political analysts disagree over whether Iraq will now become the primary issue as the election nears and Democrats step up efforts in dozens of contested races to recapture the House and Senate.

Chuck Todd, editor in chief of the Washington, D.C., political journal Hotline, thinks Democrats like Pederson will press the Iraq issue in the closing weeks of the campaign. "You don't want to throw out your best issue in September only to see the other side beat it back," he said.

Stu Rothenberg of the Rothenberg Political Report said Iraq is the national election's "800-pound elephant in the bedroom." But he predicts that many candidates, both Democrats and Republicans, will continue to avoid it as a central issue. Democrats are split over the war, he said. The left wants to get out now, and others, like Pederson, want to change strategy but oppose a pullout that could collapse the region into chaos.

"Everybody is wary about talking about it," Rothenberg said. "Republicans want to defend themselves but don't want to get bogged down in why we got into Iraq. It's such a huge issue, but both sides are tiptoeing around it."

23. I would gladly recommend...
your post, Frenchie, if I'd posted often enough to do so. It sure is nice to see Wes's hugely impressive efforts on behalf of Democrat office seekers spelled out in black and white. Bravo, General...and Brava, Frenchie for the important post.

25. Great thread. I wanted this update.
I've been on the road for work, and out of the loop, so I missed some of these. All you have to do is blink and Clark has been through three cities for Democrats.

26. He worked like this for Kerry/Edwards.
Edited on Sun Oct-01-06 09:04 PM by NCarolinawoman
He was always taking the red-eye back in '04. Then the campaign finally rented a plane for him.

Sometimes I wish he would rest; but I guess you can't take the General out of the General. Didn't he spend half of the Kosovo campaign sleepless?

I read that he's worried that if Dems don't take the House or Senate, he thinks Bush's crowd will attack Iran. :(

27. Wow, it's like he's trying to build a pyramid from the ground up.
Now any Washington campaign consultant can tell you the best way to build a pyramid is to start at the top and then start laying the bricks in under that until you reach the grassroots. What's the matter with that guy?

Oh, and by the way, Wesley is not a girl's name!

31. Frenchie...you've been one of the best and most vocal Wes supporters.
Edited on Sun Oct-01-06 09:42 PM by Bonobo
I want to thank you and state that, as cynical as I am, Wes is the only guy (well, maybe Al these days too) that fills me with hope.

Let's get this man in office, Frenchie.

You can keep helping, even though you're a citizen of the Great North.

33. Great update
I've been so damn busy this past month that I haven't been online as much as I'd like. It's good to see my favorite general hasn't suffered any loss of stamina.

Thanks for another great post Frenchie. :)

36. You are welcome!
I noted that CBS had a story on the Murtha Rally, in where they initially "oops" forgot to mention Wes Clark's name although the quoted him. This morning, his name had been added to the text! What was that about? :wtf:

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/10/01/eveningnews/main2054343.shtml?source=RSSattr=Politics_2054343

"This guy laid his life on the line for us and for our country, and we're not going to let any Swift Boaters, shrimp boaters or anybody else take out Jack Murtha," said retired Ge. Wesley Clark, another Vietnam vet and the former Supreme Allied Commander of NATO.
