Parents of America, your children are at grave risk. You can save them.
The news pouring out of Washington yesterday and today is not about the War on Terror©. It is not about the War in Iraq© or the War in Afghanistan©. It is not about the economy or your Social Security or tax cuts.

The news out of Washington today is about an assault on your children and about the cover up of that assault.

Men in high places, with offices of power and influence, are abusing children in the worst way. They are using the internet and other means to communicate with them about sexual acts. They are enticing them to undress. They are asking them about masturbation. They are asking for pictures of them. And who knows what else? The story just keeps getting worse.

The men are all Republicans. The men either were directly involved in the acts or were actively involved in the cover up, protecting the most evil among them from exposure and prosecution.

A young man, now 18, but under 16 at the time of the assault, employed as a page at the United States Capitol, presumably in an atmosphere of safety and security, was the currently known victim. Will there be more, yet to be identified? It turns out that our halls of government are regularly inhabited by child abusers and those who would enable and cover up pedophilia.

The four most prominent names in the story - so far - are Mark Foley, a Republican congressman from Florida, the actual pedophile, Republican House Whip, Roy Blount of Missouri, Republican Majority Leader John Boehner of Ohio, and the man who sits second in line for the presidency, Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert of Illinois.

This is not some political dirty trick. It is real and the story is even now continuing to expand in all its disgusting scope. Foley has already resigned, which is remarkable in that he was a virtual shoe-in to win reelection. Congressmen Hastert, Boehner, and Blount have made a number statements during the day yesterday and today. They started by denying they knew what Mr. Foley was doing. Then they denied involvement in a cover up when it was clear they knew - 11 months ago! Now they have decided to call for Mr. Foley's prosecution.

This is all being done in a pitiful effort to salvage their reelection hopes.

Parents of America, make no mistake. These men - and quite likely others - are either child abusing pedophiles or enablers of child abusing pedophiles, or the protectors, not of the children, but of the child abusing pedophile who is their political cohort.

But there's the real irony. The man at the center of this storm, Mr. Foley, acting in concert and with the approval of the others, was instrumental in legislation designed to protect children from the very acts committed.

You owe it to your children, your grandchildren, and mine, to keep these men out of power. Even if you don't live in their congressional district, you need to think more than twice before voting for any Republican. For all their talk of 'family values', they care not a whit for the children who they use as both political pawn and their selfish, perverted means of sexual release.

The disgusting hypocrisy is incredibly clear. Read the stories, follow the news. It will be clear. This is not an isolated incident. It is a pattern of long standing for Republicans to posture like peacocks against the very things they themselves do with impunity and glee.

And if we can't trust them with the basic well being of our children, how can we risk the well being of our country?

These men - these Republicans - can not be trusted. Think about that when you go to the polls this coming November 7.

3. I am always deeply concerned with those who express OUTRAGE
and have a twinkle in their eyes at the same time.... I see it as blatantly obvious - I wish many others did as well. These ^%$&^*&% are OBVIOUS to anyone who takes the time to look at them.

5. I hafta agree
H2S also errs by calling it pedophilia, when it's actually sexual predation. I suppose that term doesn't have the same resonance for PR attack purposes. I think it's better to frame the issue around the Republicans' obsession with political power over all else.

Rubberstamp Republicans are so obsessed with power that they have abandoned their moral and Constitutional responsibilities. They have proven they are unfit to govern. The American people must hold them accountable for these failings.

7. Call it whatever you like
The technical; differences (if they exist, and I'm sure in your view they do) are distinctions without meaning.

The larger point is made by saying less, not more.

9. Call it overstatement
Its a rare day that I disagree with you on anything, but on this one I have to go with larkie. Its blatant exaggeration because 1) people's kids were only at risk if they're a page; and 2) it's only one Republican who did this. Even the dumbest voter could see right through it. It's the kind of cynical exploitation that wearies voters.

I think the bigger point is that they put their own personal political power above protecting innocent children by covering it up. It shows their immorality knows no bounds. They don't care about people, just power. Makes you think about what else they are willing to do to hold on to power.

11. I think when you frame this obscenity with all the other
assaults on children and families from this administration it starts sounding pretty compelling.

This is one more, and a most obvious perhaps, example of the care with which the GOP treats children.

I don't have the statistics, but I bet someone does: what's the child poverty rate now as opposed to 2000?

How many people's children have been killed in Iraq?

Childhood diseases?

Bankrupting our children and grandchildren for tax cuts for the rich today?

I think we could probably go on and on, yes?

Family Values my ass.

8.  the "C" word?
Great post!

If, as alleged, The House Leadership decided to withhold this information from the one Dem on the page oversight commitee.....wouldn't that be a conspiracy?

I'm not a lawyer but it sure sounds like one to me
