ALERT: GOP Talking Point ! Barney Frank Scandal same as Foley.
I think not. Here's how to curtail another GOP Talking Point.

Note how the GOP supporters quicky and deftly attempt to shift the blame away from Foley and the failures of the Republican House Leadership and try to make this a bi-partisan scandal.
Facts about Barney Frank. Yes, he was involved in sex scandal with A 28 year old male prostitute in 1990, but when the then Democratic Leadership found out about it, they took immediate action. They tried to expel him, censure him, and finally succeeded in reprimanding him (they feared he would lose his seat). Instead, he won re-election with 66% of the vote and bigger margins since then. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barney_Frank
Compare this with the Foley case and the failures of the Republican majority to act on information given to them more than a year ago. Foley (Maf52) was asking a 16 year old male page to describe how he masterbates ! Worse still is the inaction by the House Leadership. They did nothing and allowed this man to continue to be the head of the NCMEC Caucus and of all things run for re-election. And now a year later when this bombshell comes out, they finally start harping about pursuing a criminal investigation.

2. More importantly, Democrats tried to nip it in the bud when they controll-
ed Congress whereas 16 years later we find the Republicans in power and not doing a GOD DARN thing about it untils it's splashed in the news, even though, Hastert, Alexander, Boehner, and a host of others in the Republican leadership knew about it. Heck they were letting this man run for re-election unimpeded until the sh*t hit the fan !

3. All gay politicians look alike. They are confusing Barney with
Gerry Studds, who was censured in 1983 for a relationship he had TEN YEARS EARLIER.

The kid was 17 at the time of the relationship, but they didn't get caught. When the story finally broke and the Congressman was censured, the "kid" was 27. He did a press availability with the Congressman, reiterated that the relationship was consensual, and that it was NOBODY's business what he did in his bedroom.

Was Studds wrong? Yes. But don't lose sight of the fact that this happened THIRTY THREE YEARS AGO, and was exposed TWENTY THREE YEARS AGO.

This is hardly a "contemporary" event.

5. Yes the Studds case happened in 83 at the same time as the Crane case.
Edited on Sun Oct-01-06 03:28 AM by AIJ Alom
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Crane
Crane (GOP)(involved with 17 year old female page) was defeated in the primary, Studds(DEM) (involved with 17 year old male page) went on to serve until 1996. But as was the case in 1989 with Frank (DEM), so was the case in 1983. The Democratic Majority also did the same with Buz Lukens (GOP).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_%22Buz%22_Lukens When the Democratic Controlled House found out, immediate action followed regardless if the individual was a Dem or GOP. Yet the party of the moral Right, the Republicans did nothing for a whole year !

Corrected for errors. Luken case 1989. Crane 1983.

8. you're correct - the point is that the GOP did nothing. The "do nothing"
Edited on Sun Oct-01-06 03:50 AM by keopeli
The "do nothing" GOP.

Laisez-faire is just too 'French'.

Let Sleeping Dogs Lie Congress takes too long to say.

They are the Do Nothing GOP.
Every time there's a problem, they do nothing.

Iraq - let's do nothing
Katrina - let's do nothing
Enron - let's do nothing
Treasonous leaks - let's do nothing
No WMDs - let's do nothing
Congressman sexually engaging a minor - let's do nothing
Bombing of the Cole - let's do nothing
Osama intent on attacking US - let's do nothing

I'm ready to DO SOMETHING!

Peace

9. You forgot a few.
Feb, 2000 Taliban offer of Bin Laden for lifting of sanctions.
Dec, 2001 Tora Bora.
2000/2004 Election Irregularities.
2002 Energy Crisis in California.

Then again the list goes on and on.

I agree with you, I'm tired of this do-nothing attitude. Our nation is to be the beacon of freedom, not it's executioner.

It's time to make this nation great again.

11. EGg Zac Lee
Think of it; Iraq, 9-11, Foley, election theft /crimes, Dick Cheney's Energy task force, media
manipulation, the Patriot Act, NSA aka spying aka total information awareness, the response
to Katrina, Torture Law, packing the court, bush's background and yet he still is President (
DUIs, coke, AWOL, insider trading, abortion on a former lover ? , his lack of I.Q.), gas price
manipulation come election time, the impeachment of Clinton, Fox News, sending those
poor rescue people into ground zero so they would get "dosed w/ toxic air, gay bashing,
keeping the blacks from voting, using God, stealing our nation's wealth, and selling fear 24/7.

And just like the Nazis who let sexual predators, thieves, and drug addicts stay in power as long
as "they" served party; as is the case of Foley predation on young boys, so what? As long as he
toed the company line he was protected by the "mob" aka the power structure behind the "Boy King."

14. Oh, they DO things all right
Theyre not a do nothing Congress, they do a lot of things--most of which are illegal, immoral or both.
Iraq--they enabled it
Katrina--used it as Christmas for their corporate campign contributors
Enron--enacted legislation that set Enron up
This country'd be a lot better off if they really WERE a do nothing Congress

10. And yet Jeff Gannon wandered the White House at will
Thank you oh so much for bringing this "scandal" to our attention, but I think the country is a bit immune to prostitution scandals by now - which is what caused the leadership to act, not the *gasp* gay sex, ssshhhh.

This is about pedophilia. Gay adult sex has got nothing to do with it so people need to stop dredging it up.

12. This is a great point that should be hammered home, especially
to the freepers who have been claiming that "at least the GOP got rid of him." It is now clear that the GOP did nothing of the sort and, in fact, would have let this guy continue on with impunity had a news organization not exposed his behavior.

15. Exactly right about the Democratic House Leadership acting fast.
Edited on Sun Oct-01-06 08:34 AM by terrya
In fact, remembering it then, I thought it was sort of unfair to Frank. I thought it was because he was gay. Singling him out because of his sexual orientation. The Democratic House leadership moved very quickly to discipline Barney Frank. They didn't wait a fucking year, that's for sure.

And as you pointed out, Stephen Gobie was 28 years old.

It was a colossally stupid thing Barney Frank did, I'll grant that. He should have paid for it and he did.

But the voters of his district took the incident into account and...returned him to the House after the incident.

This situation is completely, unquestionably different than the Mark Foley situation.
