Whilst I would like to win back both houses, I'd rather lose both than just one, and LET THIS HOUSE OF CARDS FALL UNDER *THEIR* WATCH.

There's so much shit going down, stuff that they've screwed up, stuff that CAN'T be fixed in just 6 or even 8 years.

They knew this at every turn. Everything they've done has been in an effort to get as much as they can get away with, because they knew that when the collapse came, they'd be out with the next election.

Seriously, it's a house of cards, and even if it's only January 18th when Iraq completely implodes, terrorists attack 10 major targets in the US, Korea launches a nuke, the stock market falls 5,000 points, etc., the Republican will say it was OUR fault...

I would swim a river of snot to help get a Democratic majority in either house of Congress this year. We wouldn't be able to get anything done (except dig into what's been covered up for six years and that's a big one), but we sure would be able to stop a lot. Like the torture bill that Congress just passed, as just one example.

Having control of all branches of government won't stop the GOP from blaming us. It hasn't prevented them so far, has it? And don't forget, they have the corporate media at their beck and call to make sure their version of every story gets out.

Your point is very true about the GOP blaming us. They've controlled everything now for over 6 years, and STILL blame us for everything.

That's why I said I'm 50/50. I'd MUCH rather get both houses, however, than just get one. (maybe 70/30?)

One other thing IN YOUR FAVOR is that "momentum" is a big factor. People LOVE winners, and HATE losers (as opposed to "underdogs"). A one-house win in 2006 WILL be good in giving us momentum for winning the white house in 2008.

The point is I agree, there ARE upsides to WINNING. *I* am certainly supporting and voting Democrats in 2006!

6. The Republicans will believe they are unbeatable and

start fighting with each other. Many middle-of-the-road Republicans have kept their mouths shut during this administration hoping that they could change the extreme rightward bent of their party from within. If the Republicans succeed in holding on to both houses in November, the middle-of-the-roaders will be forced to reassert themselves within the party or simply be squeezed out completely. This is especially true on issues like fiscal responsibility and our interventions in other countries. Moderate Republicans differ from the Bush administration on these major issues. They like the tax cuts and they want to support Bush on terrorism, but they don't like the debt or the cost of interventionist actions in far-off places like Iraq. Our NATO proxies are not doing well in Afghanistan and our own troops are in bad shape in Iraq. The neo-cons were buoyed up to the top of the Republican Party on a lot of bravado and hot air. Their macho image is tarnishing very quickly due to the military set-backs. It's just a matter of time before some moderate Republican gets a little courage and speaks up -- or bolts to the Democratic Party or some third party and takes a lot of Republicans with him or her.

I believe that one of the Democratic leaders will emerge as the top contender fairly early before the election this time. Based on my conversations with Democrats in California, I think I know who that will be. Although several Democrats are well qualified to run, a strangely broad spectrum of support seems to be building around a certain candidate. I talk to Democrats who are well placed in the party and to Democrats who don't know any of the activists and the same name comes up. If that is still the situation in August of 2007, and if that individual doesn't meet some horrible misfortune (as Democratic candidates for the presidency are wont to do), the Democratic party will be extremely well organized and united behind this man -- and it is a man -- in 2008.

14. If Leiberman wins I hope Jim Webb stares him down good

in the corridors of Congress. I don't think that Webb suffers fools lightly; particularly Neo-con chicken-hawk fools.

If Ned looses, I still think many other Dem contenders will win.
