Why Wasn't Foley Kicked Upstairs? |
|
Why didn't the GOP powers that be, those in the know, get a known loose cannon out of a position where he couldn't or wouldn't act with propriety, and do an Ashcroft--promote him into the Executive Branch in some cushy but controlled environment?
I think this was a sign that the GOP hold on the Legislature, even in such a corrupt state as Florida, is tenuous at best, and they are desperate to hold onto every seat currently in their camp. With too many plates pinning in the air, too much arrogance, and their own homophobia and other closetted tendencies, the GOP just didn't think it through.

2. He Didn't Strike Me As Smart Enough for That |

But then, even Rove's beginning to see that his whirlwind is too big for him to handle. The idea of mutual back-stabbing, as opposed to back-scratching, taking over the GOP is pleasureable!

3. He was a certain vote, and one they could tell what to do |

They OWNED him because of what was known, and I bet other Senators leaned on him with it too, given how widely known it apparently was.
Morals are anathema to the Republican mind. They view morals/conscience as a crutch they have the benefit of being free from.
Their win at all costs mentality allows them to easily partner with thugs, terrorists, dictators and pedophiles.
All they had to do for a yes or no from Mr. Foley was call. He knew what he had to do. Look at his voting record. He is a stooge.
As for his Chair on the Missing and Exploited Children Comm., well, that is just good ole' Rovian plausible deniability. All they had were the five emails which were weird but not smoking guns, and so they gave him a job that would make his opponents look depraved if they attempted to address the emails.

I think you nailed it--my congratulations. That still doesn't excuse the stupidity of not covering the collective ass of the GOP, though.

6. He was a useful tool while his hobby was kept under wraps |

Look at his voting record. He did whatever the neocons wanted him to do.
He may yet find a permanent place in the halls of power once he's been deodorized by rehab and turning back to Jesus, renouncing his evil lifestyle.
