The Five Stages of (GOP) Death
The Five Stages of (GOP) Death
By Nancy Greggs

DENIAL:

There was no vote tampering, voter suppression, or vote machine manipulation in the 2000 and 2004 elections. Bush won fair and square.

No one could possibly have anticipated using commercial airlines as missiles. No one could possibly have anticipated that the levees would be breached. No one could possibly have anticipated that there would be a strong insurgency.

There was no cherry-picking of intelligence. We all honestly believed that Iraq had WMDs.

We never implied that there was a connection between Saddam Hussein and 9-11.

We never implied that we knew where the WMDs were.

ANGER:

If you disagree with the Administration’s policies you are not a patriot!!!

If you don’t get behind the president, you are aiding and abetting the enemy!!!

The anti-war crowd is jubilant every time a US soldier is killed in Iraq, because they want the terrorists to win!!!

BARGAINING:

Just give up a few of your freedoms, and we’ll protect you in exchange. Trust us.

Tax cuts for wealthy individuals and corporations will trickle down to the middle class, so it’s a win-win situation. Trust us.

Outsourcing American jobs will actually mean more high-paying jobs here at home. Trust us.

Let us put the country into debt – it will actually strengthen the economy. Trust us.

Spying on American citizens is unlawful, but don’t you want to give the president the tools he needs to keep America safe? Trust us.

Torture is a terrible thing; but isn’t it worth it, if it saves American lives? Trust us.

DEPRESSION:

N.I.E. Report: “US War in Iraq Fuels Terrorism”

Bob Woodward’s “State of Denial” hits bookstores

Abramoff emails show ties to White House stronger and more far-reaching than previously reported

Foley resigns amidst sex scandal involving under-age boys; higher-ups implicated in cover-up

Vital information withheld from 9-11 Commission starts surfacing

Polls show steadily increasing gains for Democrats within weeks of mid-terms

ACCEPTANCE:

November 7, 2006

RIP, GOP.

43. CODEPINK Give Peace A Vote
Aren't you ready to let the politicians know that we, the majority of Americans, want an end to the ongoing war in Iraq? Then please join me, along with Yoko Ono, Susan Sarandon, Alice Walker, Dolores Huerta, Cornell West, my friends at CODEPINK, and MANY MORE in signing Give Peace a Vote.

This is a Voters Pledge that we will only vote for candidates who publicly call for a speedy withdrawal from Iraq and will keep us from engaging in future unjustified wars. Let's send a clear message this November and beyond, that we believe in international law and diplomacy over aggression.

Please sign the Voters Pledge and ask at least 10 of your friends to sign as well. With millions of peace voters, we can elect leaders who will Give Peace a Chance. That's all we are saying.

Simply copy and paste this url in the address bar of your web browser to sign up NOW: http://www.democracyinaction.org/dia/organizationsORG/codepink/petition.jsp?petition_KEY=295&t=GPV.dwt

Thank you for taking action!

8. I'd never agee that ALL Americans are stupid ...
... and a lot of the ones who WERE stupid enough to support BushCo have since become a lot wiser, now that they've seen the end result of his policies.

I'm optimistic -- so many unpleasant little chickens coming home to roost, all at the same time, all within weeks of the mid-terms.

Sometimes the darkest clouds are just a sign of the Perfect Storm.

22. Great, Nance!
As usual, another spot on critique of the Republican political machine. However, I don't see November 7,2006 as the moment of acceptance for the GOP. It will take longer than that because they'll kick, scream, throw tantrums, mud sling and perhaps declare marshal law before they cede the reigns of power to Democrats. They will not go gently into that good night. And that's not even considering Diebold's part in this play. We all know of elections that SHOULD have broken this wicked spell cast upon Americans but DIDN'T because of...........Diebold. Hopefully their nefarious ministrations are negated by the sheer volume of anti-GOP votes this November, but somehow, I doubt it. We must be ultra-vigilant this election year and challenge all "funny" results to the highest degree.
I DO love your writing though, Nance. :applause: Keep up the good work.

I don't know. Would anyone here object to torture if 9/11 had been uncovered and prevented by it?

Tax cuts for wealthy individuals and corporations will trickle down to the middle class, so it’s a win-win situation. Trust us.

Outsourcing American jobs will actually mean more high-paying jobs here at home. Trust us.

Let us put the country into debt – it will actually strengthen the economy. Trust us.

Hasn't this actually happened though?

N.I.E. Report: “US War in Iraq Fuels Terrorism”

What about further down the report where it says:
“Should jihadists leaving Iraq perceive themselves, and be perceived, to have failed, we judge fewer fighters will be inspired to carry on the fight.”

Although you do make a good point. There was Bin Laden's quote:
"The best proof of this is the Americans' continuing aggression against the Iraqi people using the Peninsula as a staging post<.>…espite the great devastation inflicted on the Iraqi people by the crusader-Zionist alliance, and despite the huge number of those killed, in excess of 1 million... despite all this, the Americans are once against trying to repeat the horrific massacres, as though they are not content with the protracted blockade imposed after the ferocious war or the fragmentation and devastation. So now they come to annihilate what is left of this people and to humiliate their Muslim neighbors. …"
except that statment was issued in 1998 (under Clinton's watch).

Seems no matter what we'll do, the terrorists will find any excuse to hate us and recruit against us.

35. Did you make a wrong turn somewhere?

This war was a mistake from it's conception, and it's cost us American lives, our treasury, and our civil liberties.. Are you really trying to defend Bush's actions? The people of Iraq hate us because we attacked them for no reason, they hate us because we have made their lives worse.. They hate us because of the hell that our president unleashed on them.. How anyone could defend this liar and thief is beyond me.. How people that proclaim to be Christians could back a man that has caused needless slaughter is beyond me.. This administration has lied about everything.. EVERYTHING.. It truly is sad to see how far low my country and countrymen have fallen..

37. Only half an answer
Ok, so you bring up fine points about why Iraqis hate us. What about all the non-Iraqi terrorists?

And do you honestly believe that the Iraqis were better off with Saddam than without him? My uncle's currently working in Iraq (he works in the diplomacy wing of the government) and has said conditions are better than they once were.

Besides that, Bush has lied about EVERYTHING? He said there was a connection between Al Queda and Iraq and hey! there's a quote from Bin Laden justifying attacks on America because of Iraq (again, this quote was long before Bush took office).

Finally, could you please detail for me exactly what civil liberties you personally have lost.

Of course, if you do not respond, I'll assume that jack-booted thugs have invaded your home and carried you away. In which case, that does answer my question.

40. Those RW talking points just don't resonate ...
... (or 'resignate' as your president would say) over here, my friend.

Yes, everything is going REALLY WELL in Iraq. People being gunned down in the streets on their way to forage for clean drinking water, up to TWO (count 'em, TWO) hours of electricty per day when it used to be twenty-four. Tens of thousands dead, hundreds of thousands already fled from the country due to the constant violence. No work, hospitals in shambles, schools empty because it's not safe for kids to venture out on the streets to get there.

Yuppers, all going SWIMMINGLY!!!

In fact, it sounds so COOL, maybe you should grab a uniform and head over there yourself.

Send us a postcard, okay?

Thank you for answering my question. I guess you're right, that things for the Iraqis were far better under Saddam. After all, what does freedom matter as long as your safe, secure and "the trains run on time" as they say.

So I guess you are a supporter of Bush then? After all, isn't he taking our freedoms away to make us more 'safe and secure'?

47. You're a gamer, I'll give you that
Yeah, that's some freedom we've imposed at gunpoint, huh? When Iraqis are free to shop or go for a walk without risking being shot or blown up, when they have more than a couple of hours of electricity per day, when they have access to decent health care and clean water, when they are free to elect whatever government they want - even if it's a theocratic one - then come back and extol the wonders of their freedom.

Things were better for the Iraquis under Saddam, yes. And that's quite a sobering thought. The country was better off under a brutal tyrant than under the tender ministrations of George W. Bush and the Pentagon. How appalling is that?

And your President doesn't give a crap about your freedom or your safety either. The War on Terror is just a pyramid scheme. And if you haven't realized that by now, no amount of lurking on this site or any other will get the message across to you.

52. Well..
I hate to be the first to inform you, but your uncle is delusional at best.. Because of what our country did the people of Iraq have very little (if any) clean water, and electric. They are attacking our troops on average of every 15mins, and civilians are suffering and dying because of what our country did to them. If you or your uncle thinks that is "better" than let me be the first to by you guys a clue. The people of Iraq think it's worse, the U.N. thinks it's worse, and the new reports that just came out say the situation is going to get even worse in the coming year. Our country brought a needless slaughter to their country, and we've lost American lives, our standing in the world community, and our treasury has been looted.. I hope you're prepared to explain to your maker why you're a cheerleader for this mess.. You really think this is going to score any points with The Prince of Peace? Good luck with that..

let it work out like that! Now that they've got their base all disgusted and panicked, let this be the thing that brings them down. I think that once people start looking at this they'll be more receptive to look at all the other crimes and negligence. At least some of the hard core Republicans I know are beginning to see the light. But I think it is going to be close.

BTW, I am taking my now 18 year old daughter (last week) to register to vote as a DEMOCRAT today. I'm so proud, despite the pink hair. :)

the repug's have been brain dead for years, their eyes will follow the shiny objects (re; FAUX news) put in front of them, but they can't hear or reason.
What really bothers me is that even moderate Rep's still don't speak ill of the ones that
hijacked their party and turned it into a fascist one. They absolutely ARE in denial and have
been for some time. If they speak out now, they will have to admit that they made a mistake,
and their pride won't allow it. It will never happen.
