considering how many DUers are carrying "extra pounds" around, attacking anyone for their weight is not the best way to go.

I've made this case periodically when "fat" gets used as a modifier to a string of insults, like this: "Could you leave the 'fat' out of it, please? "Lying, hypocritical bastard" can stand alone; it doesn't need "fat" in it. Those of us who are fat don't mind the word, but we do mind it being used as a insult. Thanks. :)"

As a fat woman and DUer, I get weary of seeing "fat" used as an insult here on DU. I expect better of us. I'm not laughing.

It's basically "venting" in a way. It's true "clowning." When I read it, I told him he's making up "Yo Mama's So Fat" jokes! It's silly pressure-release.

Yes, it's really about the politics, and yeah, the politics have nothing to do with Hastert being fat. It's not about dissing fat people; he's ranked on other rightwingers as skinny, and he'd never say such things about Democrats of any physical sort.

H2S and I are different in many ways, and this is one: he uses expressions and makes jokes I never would. I guess I'm the more "PC" one? (And I admit some other-standard when it comes to women: I posted a rant when people were dissing Katherine Harris for her age and looks, because physically, she looks just fine for a woman her age.) But he's never, ever unkind, unfair, or in any way deprecatory toward people based on their physical characteristics. (But based on other characteristics -- like being rightwing jerks and criminals -- he's not above put-downs involving physical traits.)

A second way we're different, fwiw: He's short, fat, bald, and a decade older than me. And he takes no offense -- in fact, finds it hilarious -- when SparklyJr and I tease him about being short, fat, bald, and a decade older than me.

(Early in their relationship, SparklyJr tried to embarrass him in a restaurant by pretending the glare from his bald head was hurting her eyes. He put a napkin on his head to shield her eyes, and sat through the rest of the meal that way. SHE was so humiliated she moved to another table!)

She's tapped his tummy and asked, "How's the baby?" When he talks about his teenage years in the 50s, I ask, "And how did Tyrannosaurus Rex feel about that?" He's fine being teased about anything, because he's so secure with who he is.
