WES CLARK- "Bring Govt back to"PUBLIC Service rather than SELFISH Service"
Edited on Tue Oct-03-06 01:41 AM by FrenchieCat
Wes Clark campaigned for Charlie Brown(D) this evening in CA. Charlie Brown is a long shot contender vying for Rep. John Doolittle(R)'s job in California's 4th district (Sacramento to Lake Tahoe)

Earlier today, Wes Clark was at UCLA giving a Lecture on Torture.
A couple of days before, a blogger had seen Clark had another event and shared her conversation with him here.....
"Wes... Can you comment on the 'torture legislation?'"

Looks me right in the eye. He just had this look like I crushed a giant medicine ball into his chest-actual pain registered on his face.

Then looks down at the floor. Then silence. Lifts his head, brings his hands in close to his chest and says, "I don't have the words.... I'm ashamed for my country, and embarrased by it."

What more can you say. Goosebumps, yeah. But not the good kind. I just nodded.

SACRAMENTO

Clark, a former NATO commander, said Republicans had failed to provide honest, competent leadership. He said Brown would help bring the government back to "public service rather than selfish service."

Democratic congressional challenger Charlie Brown, engaged in a longshot bid to unseat Republican Rep. John Doolittle, campaigned with retired Army Gen. Wesley Clark on Monday and sounded the themes of security and integrity.

The evening rally at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial near the state Capitol had the feel of an event intended to resonate with the congressional district's conservative voters. Republicans hold an 18-point voter registration edge.

Brown and Clark served in Vietnam -- Brown as a helicopter rescue pilot and Clark as an Army officer who was awarded the Silver Star.

Clark dismissed Republicans' contention that a Democrat-controlled Congress would deal a blow to the fight against terrorism.

"This is the third election in a row bashing Democrats on national security," Clark said. "But since this administration has been in office, we've had nothing but security problems."

Brown on Monday also called for Doolittle to return a donation he received from Mark Foley, the Republican Florida congressman who resigned last week after sexually explicit e-mails he sent to congressional pages were made public.

Doolittle should say what he knew about Foley's actions and return $1,000 he received from him in 2002, Brown said.

Notice how Brown worked the "I'm so horny for young boys" Foley scandal into the article! ;)

General Clark has certainly mastered the art of the soundbite.

8. Clark understands how to turn Red districts Blue
That is why so many Democratic candidates want him by their side campaigning for him. When a man like Wes Clark, who devoted his whole life to defending America, talks about Honor, voters listen to him. Personal honor isn't second nature to Clark, it is his first nature.

I was just in New Hampshire for a work related event over the weekend. My girl friend came also and wore a Clark 08 button at the event. Several Republican veterans who were at the same event came up to us and told us they would support Clark for President in 2008. They trust and respect Clark, and hope that he runs.

Its not about military for me, I'm an academic...Its about intellectual integrity. Clark knows what he is saying, he never double crosses himself. He is not afraid to explain a complex understanding of a situation and act on it. I demand he be AT LEAST VP in whatever we run in 2008.

18. I'm an ex VISTA volunteer
It's not about the military for me either. What I think those vets we met see in Clark is a real commitment to bettering America, and to serving others with honor. For me that's the exact same personal quality that motivates a good community organizer who works long hours at low pay to bring about positive changes in a community. That part isn't even about Liberal or Conservative, it's about putting the needs of others above your own, and yes, it is about PUBLIC rather than selfish service.

There's a phrase to describe Wes Clark that many of us who backed him came to during the 2004 campaign was: President we were promised as a kid". It is Clark's ability to compellingly articulate the inclusive idealistic thread of America's social fabric, which is so essential to the health of our society, that helps make him a break out candidate for Democrats. Wes Clark is trust worthy, and in today's political climate that counts for a lot. The Republican Party has increasingly become the Party of Greed, Corruption, and Hypocrisy, and a broad range of Americans are fed up with it.

All of that helps Clark appear on behalf of other Democrats to get them elected, and it would help him get elected in a Presidential Election, but while personal character and integrity is important to me personally, that isn't even my main reason for backing Clark, though it comes close. I love Clark's domestic platform and I trust in his ability to head up our nation in dangerous times.

10. More good press for Charlie Brown....aided by Wes Clark!

Democratic congressional challenger Charlie Brown, engaged in a longshot bid to unseat Republican Rep. John Doolittle, campaigned with retired Army Gen. Wesley Clark on Monday and sounded the themes of security and integrity.

Brown said his rally was a contrast to a planned Doolittle event Tuesday featuring President Bush at an El Dorado Hills country club.

"What he's doing is fundraising," Brown said of Doolittle. "This is campaigning."

Under Doolittle and others, Brown said, politicians in Washington had strayed from the constitutional idea of "we the people."

"We need leadership to represent the people and not just the money groups," he said, reprising a familiar theme of his campaign.

Brown has criticized Doolittle for his ties to Jack Abramoff, the GOP lobbyist who pleaded guilty in a conspiracy to corrupt public officials.

Doolittle accepted campaign money from Abramoff and used the lobbyist's luxury sports box for a fundraiser without initially reporting it, although he has denied wrongdoing. His wife and one of his former aides also worked for Abramoff.

11. This is another reason why Clark is our last best hope.,
He's not my Gandhi or King or Mandela, but he he is a decent and honorable man. And even the brainwashed will be able to see that. A pity the DLC chose someone with less integrity in 2004, although they were right in judging him less loyal to corporatism than their guy.

21. Here's a link to an article on Wes' lecture at UCLA on torture
http://www.dailybruin.ucla.edu/news/articles.asp?id=38184

Gen. Wesley Clark made his first appearance as a member of the UCLA International Institute on Monday to discuss changes in U.S. policy regarding the Geneva Conventions.

Clark, a candidate for the Democratic presidential nominee in 2004, led faculty in a discussion on current legislation that would change the way in which the U.S. follows the Geneva Conventions, the treaties that guide humanitarian aspects of international law.

Clark voiced his dissatisfaction with the legislation, which was sent to President Bush for signature last week.

to support him; he never lets us down.

I just watched his latest speech in Iowa. What a great speech. He doesn't use notes; just the truth.
