New Jersey's two Senate hopefuls faced off Saturday in an hourlong exchange characterized more by a lack of civility than the dialogue on issues they had said they wanted.
Sen. Robert Menendez and state Sen. Tom Kean Jr. repeatedly attacked each other during their first meeting of the fall, with Menendez frequently waving his index finger for emphasis and Kean cutting off his opponent in mid-sentence.
Both men relied on familiar lines of attack in the increasingly contentious and closely watched contest for a full six-year Senate term. The race could affect whether Democrats can take control of the U.S. Senate.
