Anti-ABB: The Eric Cartman Strategy |
|
Edited on Sat Feb-07-04 03:24 PM by absyntheNsugar
If you ever watch South Park, you are familiar with Eric Cartman. He's the obnoxious, racist, right-wing, all for me fat kid. A better example of a Freeper has never been crafted. When he doesn't get his way, he usually responds "Screw YOU GUYS, I'm going home!"
This same childish attitude seems to be in play by those who are "Anti-ABB." People who will not vote for the Democrat should Kerry/Dean/Kucinich/Clark not get the nomination (take your pick, I've heard this argument from supporters of all the candidates.)
People - I'm sorry our short attention span is so bad but this was the same logic that got us into this mess in the first place! Had Nader not run, and those voters voted Democrat (and don't give me nonsense about them staying home - you know enough of them would have held their nose and went into the voting booth) Gore would be sitting in the Oval Office, 9/11 most likeley would not have happened and Iraq would not be the quagmire it is today.
By voting for a 3rd party, staying home or lobbying Nader to run you ARE voting for Bush. You may check the Nader box, but a vote for Nader IS a vote for Bush. If you can't see that go back to third grade and take arithmetic. It seems the long term memory is gone too.
You want to send a "message" to Washington? That message will be sent, loud and clear:
You will tell America "We support your war, Mister Bush!" You will tell America "We want the rich to get out of taxes!" You will tell America "We want 500 more soldiers to die!"

I've never seen any such from Kerry, Clark, and Edwards supporters.
But overall, I agree whole heartedly with your post.

3. Never the 3rd party or independant stuff |
|
But I have seen (albiet not much) the "i'll just stay home" argument.
Again - I think most of us are smart enough to understand. It's that vocal minority that I'm talking about.

But thanks for your message of inclusion. Good luck with the Kenny strategy, as long as this particular metaphor is in use.

Dennis Kucinich, for one, has been vowing left and right to support the nominee to get Bush out. Take that for what it's worth.

It's just the non-ABB supporters I don't care for.
In all honesty, Kucinich may not win but I'm really hoping he'll drive home an AWESOME speech at the convention that gets our nominee thinking. The man is capable of getting you standing on your hinds and cheering (but I'm sure you know that already.)
Oh and if there is a God, please let Kucinich be appointed to Health and Human Services....

You need to cool out some and have some patience. When the primaries are over and there is one candidate left standing, all supporters will go home, lick their wounds and begin looking at the bigger picture, and will probably come around. The anti-ABB-ness you refer to, I think, is nothing more than a railing against the establishment and it's desire to quickly crown a nominee without letting the primaries fully run it's course.
All the supporters feel very passionately about their candidates and that is a good thing. Instead of whining about about these people who esposue this anti-ABB attitude, you should instead be trying to convince them, once the primaries are over, why they should vote for the nominee. Four more years of Bush doesn't cut it, although maybe it should (I personally think so). These people need to feel like the candidate is going to do something for them, fight for them, and take on their causes. It is up to the nominee and there supporters to convince these people. If they fail then perhaps it says something about the nominee and supporters, and not something about the people who vote.
I personally am ABB. I will vote for the democratic candidate. I did not come to this decision lightly, but I came to it nonetheless. You should understand that the flip side of the ABB arguement is that you simply "expect" peoples vote for nothing in return. In other words, a free vote. I don't think that people's votes should ever be given freely, whatever the reason. It's all about earning the votes, and it's up to the nominee to earn the other candidates supporters votes.

Those of us who have been preaching ABB since the day this website started are all on the DLC payroll. Your perception is laserlike.

I submit that Eric Cartman is a UNITER, not a DIVIDER!
AND, he's the only guy around that's kicked BOTH Saddam and Osama's asses.

19. Your reasoning is sound, your arithmetic isn't. |
|
A 3rd party, Nader or non-vote adds a zero to the Bush total, as well as the Democrat's total. I'll vote for the nominee, but I respect the protest vote (or non-vote).
