2. Did you know she comes from a family of proud Democrats?
Edited on Mon Oct-09-06 04:37 AM by pnwmom
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cokie_Roberts

"She is the daughter of the late Hale Boggs and his wife Lindy Claiborne Boggs. Boggs was Majority Leader in the House of Representatives at the time the twin engine aircraft in which he was traveling crashed over a remote section of Alaska. The site of the crash has never been located, and the bodies of Boggs and the three other men on the plane with him have never been recovered. Her mother subsequently replaced her father in Congress and served there for many years. Her sister, the late Barbara Boggs Sigmund, was mayor of Princeton, New Jersey and a candidate for U.S. Senate from New Jersey, and died of cancer. Her brother Tommy Boggs - who coined the nickname "Cokie," because he couldn't say "Corinne" - is an influential Washington, D.C. attorney and lobbyist."

On edit:

More info about her family:
http://www.lpb.org/programs/lindyboggs/bios.htm

Her family was also directly affected by Katrina:

"A native of New Orleans, Roberts' childhood home on Bourbon Street, in which her mother still lives, suffered moderate damage from Hurricane Katrina in 2005." (from the Wikipedia article)

Why do you assume she would never vote for a Democrat?

8. Yes, I would assume that
She's obviously not like the rest of her family. She bought into the GOP hook line and sinker sometime back in the late 1980's.

11. I don't think so. I think she's a Democrat who goes too far
in trying to be fair to the other side. I think she comes across as more conservative than she is out of this desire to present the other side fairly. Sometimes she certainly goes too far in this, from my perspective.

Also, she is a moderate Dem, a Louisiana Democrat by background -- not a liberal -- which makes some people around here deny that she could be Democratic at all. But those people have a narrow view of the party and of party history.

7. Uhmm, I thought George Will's look was more like, "Someone
...please put a sock in Cokie's mouth!"

6. I've listened to Cokie on...
... NPR for years. If she's a Dem, all I can say is with friends like her, who needs enemies?

She has never missed an opportunity to make a backhanded swipe at Dems. Until Friday. (or was it Thurs?)

Her commentary was a blistering attack on the Republicans and their inept handling of this whole deal. There was not a glimmer of a hint of the usual swipe at Dems.

She might just be another pundit, or she might be a bellwether for mothers everywhere. If I were a sleazeball Republican I'd be worried.

10. I'm hearing the "outraged mom" part on all sides,

truly don't think it can be discounted. Bellwether may be exactly right.

9. Why no accountability from the news media?
You can't tell me that everyone at that table and on every other pundit show and on every editorial board didn't already know about the GOP sex scandals years ago.

Yet they stood by and did nothing. They're as criminally culpable as GOP leaders.
