Fred Phelps is a Democrat? WTF?
Edited on Mon Oct-09-06 06:20 PM by tridim
This has me completely bummed. My Mom just called and told me that Phelps has been a Democrat since the 60's. Of course I didn't believe it since he doesn't hold a single Democratic ideal. Sure enough, Wiki says he's a registered Democrat and supported Gore in 2000.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_phelps#Democratic_Party

Now I know that he's nowhere near left of center so he's certainly not a Liberal, and I know anyone can register for whatever political party they wish, but in the end my Repuke mother can call me up and make me feel really icky by associating a sub-human like Phelps with the Democratic party. She wouldn't budge when I told her that if you're homophobic you're not a Democrat. She did agree that he's sub-human, but she still maintained that he's a Dem.

What else can I say? Do I lose the argument by default because Phelps is such an asshole that he registered with a political party that would never have him as a member? I'm extremely frustrated if you couldn't tell.

6. Just a good old conservative Democrat
Like Orval Faubus, Lester Mattocks, George Wallace and many others They were conservative Democrats before the Republicans were Conservative..

Remember it was Dwight Eisenhower Republican (and relatively liberal) that ordered the integration on Central High in Little Rock.

The conservatives are the problem no matter what party they belong to.

7. Fringe and phony Dems
I am sure we have some, but they do not constitute any part of our core or leadership of the same as in the GOP. Learn how to spin truthfully. Worse DINO's that regularly trash us on the airways are more deadly since they try to bridge to the so-called Reagan Democrats who are more of a narrow temporary opinion phenomenon than an identifiable core.

To be so rabid that one is a crazy GOPer one would have to be a card carrying Nazi and most of those groups wouldn't want to be included in any national party. Some fringers are MORE honorable than the nutcase coalition that is a vociferous part of the current GOP mob.

8. .
Just recently I got to know that 51% of the voters in Kentucky are registered as Democrats. They gave Bush a margin of like 20%. Like in that case, it doesn't mean that they share the current ideals of the democratic party.

Al From, Ed Koch, and a cast of DINO dozens who also claim the mantle as well.

As Rosanne Rosannadanna would say: "It's enough to make you sick!"

She's part of the "What's the matter with Kansas" crowd. I've tried to get her to read the book, but she refuses. She wont have much to say in about 30 days.

13. So what?
It's only a problem if you think guilt by association is valid reasoning, or believe that over-generalizing a population yields useful facts.

Of course, precisely such reasoning abounds in political discourse. Just goes to show the vast difference in meaning between 'political' and 'logical' is well-grounded in reality.

Edited on Mon Oct-09-06 07:59 PM by Boojatta
"Political" identifies a category of subject matter. Nothing prevents the principles of logic from being carefully applied, without bias, to that subject matter. The reality you speak of is a cultural reality, a fact that might seem permanent from our point of view, but that may look very different to future historians.

14. yes he is and EVERY democrat calls him what he is,filth. repugs though
support their coulters saying w widow enjoys her husbands death.... regardless how repugnant the republican mouth is, the republicans will support, excuse and validate. the DEMS will not. we stand with all that are decent in our disgust of this man.

kinda like both dems and repugs had issues with pages. our stubbs. their foleys. they covered it up since 98. our dems found out and immediately censored and called him on it

so, with integrity, the dems win, hands down

15. LIEberman said he's a Democrat, too.
Doesn't make him one.

Phelps has never been successful in any campaign for elected office on the Democratic ticket. That alone speaks volumes.

Bottom line: he's a nutjob who does what he does not for any party, not for any cause, but for Fred Phelps. He probably registered as a Democrat just to be a boil on our collective butt. The only thing he has in common with Democrats is that he has two eyes, two ears, a nose and a mouth; in his case though, both eyes are blind to the truth, both ears are deaf to any voice but his, he cannot smell the reek of his own putrid stench, and his mouth is ALWAYS engaged in spewing lies, filth and hatred.

18. He's a hateful bigot, and that's all he really is. Whatever
registration he made, that's the important thing.

Who knows? Perhaps he registered that way to irk more people? It does seem to be how he gets his jollies.

People can join any party, I suppose. There isn't an admission test. It doesn't even need to mean that he mostly votes for Democrats nowadays.

Horrible, horrible man, whatever the party affiliation!!!!

24. So is Zell Miller
Remember, when it's all said and done, being a Democrat is just a matter of checking a box on a voter registration card.

I seriously doubt Phelps takes part in local party politics.

and the fact that Duke actually was elected to office as a repub, which shows a lot more kinship between him and the repubs than you can find between Phelps and the Democratic party.

27. Why can't you just revoke his party membership?
Edited on Tue Oct-10-06 11:11 AM by IntravenousDemilo
Here in Canada, you don't register to vote in general elections as a party member, but if you want to vote for delegates to go to leadership and other party conventions, you have to buy a membership, usually something like $10 or $20. All one would have to say to Mr Phelps is: "Sorry Mr Phelps, the party has instructed us not to take your twenty bucks because your membership in the Democratic Party has been revoked. You might want to talk to the Republicans, though. They'll take everyone's money, no matter how dirty."
