I'm sitting in cubicle land today when a co-worker gets a call. It's his wife and he is trying to calm her down. Asking to explain why she's crying. Then he drops to his knees, white as a sheet. Drops the phone and begins to cry.
I rush to his cube. Pick up the phone, more tears and crying on the other end. My buddy reaches up and takes the phone from my hand and hangs up. Fighting back the tears he says his son has just been reported KIA.
God I hate this war!! We need to get these kids home.
Oh by the way, Thunderbirds made a flyby today, nobody in our office gave a damn.

13. I remember this during the Vietnam War. Coworkers getting calls |
|
that their fiance, brother, cousin, boyfriend had been killed.
It's unbelievable that we didn't learn from that.
It's unbelievable that Americans allowed GWB to ever be "commander in chief".

25. We did learn, for awhile. Then the rightwing propaganda machine |
|
kicked in with full force and turned all the lessons on their head, filled people's minds with propaganda and lies. A new generation came up ignorant of history.
We're reaping the consequences.

I know of war loss. Lost a brother in Beruit. Lost a whole bunch of buddies and my innocense in Nam. I can't say much to this guy though cuz my son is back home from his second tour in Iraq.
No way is my kid going back!! he still has all his fingers and toes, but when he arrived home I saw the thousand yard stare. We had a loooong hard talk about it. His war is so very different from my war and vets don't usually relate well across the wars. However, I told him that I can see in his eyes his fate if he goes back and it ain't good. Combat vets eventually get "the look" when their nerves/resolve/expectations are going south on them. Those of you who have seen the elephant know what I am saying.

I'm so sorry for your co-worker and his family. When they are ready, they should seek out contact with Cindy Sheehan and other Gold Star families. They have been there and are a few steps ahead in the process of "dealing" with their lost loved one in this still highly debatable war. Not all Gold Star families agree about the validity of this war that sacrificed the lives of their loved ones. However, they choose to view it, I am truly sorry for their loss.
The * administration and their policies are literally destroying the people of our country and the world for personal gain, madness or both. It's sometimes hard to tell.

20. What probably happened |
|
was the military sent someone to the home, and informed the guy's wife, who then called him. Military policy is always to break the news in person at the home. The republicans might not give a damn about the military, but the actual military sure does.

Or maybe have sent someone to do that. But who could criticize the poor woman's judgment at a time like that?
There's a couple who lived nearby until recently, who lost a son in Vietnam. His name was Jimmy Crose and I graduated from high school with him. We rode the bus together and he was a cool guy.
His parents never got over his death. They stopped going to church and didn't ever go back, harboring bitterness all the rest of their lives. I noticed about a year ago their house was empty. I don't know where they went but I'm sure being at least in their late 70s had something to do with that.
Lots of sad stories in those days, and in these.

What a horrible task for the military personnel whose job is to do this.
