Stars Come Out for Menendez and Kean

And onto the stage at a campaign event for Senator Robert Menendez on Thursday strode Barack Obama, a colleague from Illinois, whose rock-star-like glow often generates more excitement than the candidates for whom he’s brought in to stump....

In the surest sign that the tight race between Mr. Menendez and State Senator Thomas H. Kean Jr. had moved into its most crucial period, the stars have begun to come out: in the wake of Mr. Obama’s visit, campaign events in the next three weeks promise two Clintons, a Kissinger and a Giuliani.
The two sides have also stepped up television advertising, as a poll from Quinnipiac University released on Thursday showed Mr. Menendez leading Mr. Kean by four percentage points, just above the 3.6 percent margin of error, in a campaign increasingly intense and vitriolic....

Many political strategists here say the race is likely to turn on television ads in the closing weeks, with the advantage going to whichever candidate has raised the most money since the summer. As of August, Mr. Menendez had a 3-to-1 advantage over Mr. Kean in overall resources, but both campaigns are eagerly awaiting the release of fund-raising information through Sept. 30, due out this weekend....

Senator Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts and former President Bill Clinton are scheduled to make return appearances on behalf of Mr. Menendez. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York and the singer Carole King are also expected at Democratic events.
Mr. Kean’s tentative schedule includes a second appearance by Senator John McCain of Arizona, as well as visits by Henry A. Kissinger, the former secretary of state; former Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani of New York; and the novelist Mary Higgins Clark....
