GOP Redirects Funds From Faltering Races

GOP Redirects Funds From Faltering Races

Faced with a deteriorating political climate, Republican Party officials are hoping to keep control of the House and Senate with a strategy aimed at shoring up enough endangered incumbents to preserve their majorities, while scaling back planned spending on races that now appear unwinnable.

In recent days, the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) has given back television time it had reserved in Democratic-held districts in West Virginia, South Carolina and Ohio -- apparently concluding that those races are beyond reach unless something dramatic changes the national political environment in the 25 days before the Nov. 7 election.

The Republican National Committee, which is using its substantial resources to supplement the party's Senate campaign committee, has spent virtually all of its television money in just three states -- Ohio, Missouri and Tennessee -- hoping to build a levee strong enough to save those seats and the Senate majority.

But recent events, among them the problems facing Republican Sens. George Allen in Virginia and Mike DeWine in Ohio, make that task even more difficult, GOP strategists privately concede.

1. I know they're pouring money into........
Tom Reynolds' campaign. What was thought a "safe" Republican seat a few weeks ago has turned into a possible Democratic victory after the Foley fallout. He's been spending money hand over fist and I'm sure that irks the Repigs to no end. Couldn't happen to a nice bunch of psychopaths.

Bush to campaign for troubled lawmakers

By TERENCE HUNT, AP White House Correspondent
31 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Trying to help two Republicans in trouble, President Bush will campaign next week for a congressman who admitted to having an affair and a senator accused of using racist language and keeping a Confederate flag.

"The president made a commitment and he's going to fulfill the commitment," White House press secretary Tony Snow said. "The president supports their quest for election, and he understands what's going on."

Bush will make separate appearances Thursday for Rep. Don Sherwood (news, bio, voting record), R-Pa., and Sen. George Allen (news, bio, voting record), R-Va.

Sherwood had been considered to have a safe seat for re-election until a woman filed suit against him and alleged that he had choked her during an altercation at his Capitol Hill apartment. He admitted to having an affair with the woman, 35 years his junior, but denied hurting her. They settled the case out of court.

4. The RGA has pulled assets from Iowa and is sending them to Maine
They are offering free transportation and room/board to volunteers to come to Maine on behalf of the RGA to defeat our incumbent Democratic Governor.

5. Sounds like they're giving up on Rick Santorum
I mean the guy is still 15pts behind Casey. Would seem like burning cash to campaign anymore for this loser

6. Rep. Jim Kolbe (R-AZ) spokeperson "abruptly resigned"
From Talking Points:

October 14, 2006 -- 03:26 PM EDT)

The plot thicks yet again.

Korenna Kline, spokesperson for Rep. Jim Kolbe (R-AZ), abruptly resigned yesterday.

This comes just a few days after Kolbe issued a written statement about the Foley matter that contradicted in key respects comments Kline had already made about Kolbe's knowledge of Foley's problem with pages.

A staffer for a retiring congressman finding new employment before the term ends is not terribly unusual, but there is more going on here than simply new employment opportunities.
