McGavick Lashes Out at Own Party’s Attacks on Cantwell
Though it’s routine for campaigns and allied outside groups to “go negative” against an opponent in hopes of boosting their own candidate, such ads often draw criticisms for crossing the boundary into incivility and unfairness.

Far less routine is for a candidate to lodge such a complaint against his own national party, which is spending valuable campaign resources on his behalf.

That’s precisely the situation that occurred Wednesday in the contest between first-term Democratic Sen. Maria Cantwell and Republican Mike McGavick, a former top insurance company executive and one-time Senate aide.

McGavick lit into the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) for producing a Web video that purported to depict inappropriate professional and personal relationships between Cantwell and Ron Dotzauer, a lobbyist.

“I believe this Web video you are now displaying goes too far in its implications toward the senator’s private life,” wrote McGavick, in a letter sent to NRSC officials and released to the public. “I am frustrated with what I perceive to be a different standard of investigation and reporting between me and the incumbent. But, this frustration does not extend to a desire to delve into the private life of Senator Cantwell.”

2. If he really had any savvy he'd pull the
commercials so we wouldn't have to hear his whiny voice.

5. Alas, we in Washington seem to grow politicians with so-so voices
Booth Gardner, Norm Rice . . .

sorry, guys

I guess it's because we look beyond the surface stuff! You don't have to be a movie star here!

7. And I read in an article COMMENTARY one time
that if Scoop Jackson(a politician that magazine admired greatly, btw)ever became president and gave a "fireside chat", the fire would go out.

As far as inspiring speakes, though, you do have Jim McDermott, and it's not that many years since Mike Lowry, one of the great liberal orators of modern times, was your governor.

14. Lowry WAS a great speaker.
Not exactly a telegenic face, however!

Jim McDermott is a good guy. We're lucky to have him.

3. Would McGavick be condemning the ads
if he were closing in on Cantwell in the polls, rather than sinking like a stone?

10. He "outed" himself...which was kind of weird.
He wrote some big missive to the major WA papers in which he revealed a DUI, his being a crappy father, his failed first marriage, and that he lied to Safeco employees about future job cuts...

He's a turd, but he's running a smart campaign in WA state. He comes across as very moderate, and very likable in his appearances.

9. too bad I don't trust him
do you think for one minute local politicians don't pay attention to what's going on in the outer world....what works and what doesn't???? Do you think they don't read sites like this one to see what people say, and pay attention to what they read?....how much disinformation has been spouted by Republicans about Democratic candidates, and how much have we bitched about it in the last few months?...so can't we see him figuring....gee, if acting like I care (and object to) what my own political party says about Cantwell....plays good....and makes me look like a good guy...then I'm all for it...uh huh....whatever buys votes...and at the same time he's trying to tie Cantwell's hands from exposing anything detrimental she knows about him...

I don't trust the guy...I don't care one whit how he feels about anything...period!!...and I am not stupid enough to think that he is the lone republican who is being honest this election season...just makes me wonder exactly what he's got to hide, and doesn't want dug up....yeah, after six years of these guys running things...I AM cynical...and wouldn't trust one of them further than I could throw 'em....including McGavick....

because i have no evidence otherwise. maybe he is disgusted.

there was a democrat that said she would not do negative and the opponent was attacking her hard.... patted her on the back, even though i had heard stuff about her that may have looked liked in the past it wasnt beyond her

i dont trust anyone.

he said it out loud

i give him a pat

15. Ok...I should have said
these are my thoughts, you may not feel the same...we are all allowed to have an opinion, right?....we don't see eye to eye...and I can live with that...

Don't flame me, i said he's a turd and i stand by it. But he is running a very wise campaign strategy for WA, which is pretty starkly divided. East of the Cascades is pretty solid red, and west of the mts is pretty solid blue. But Darcy Burner is gonna change all that!

16. and I agree...
that he is...I see the same things and came to the same conclusion...ie: running a smart campaign...but even though all his good natured banter, doesn't cut one iota of mustard with me, it may with some voters....let's hope not too many...

13. Yeah, right. I wonder why he didn't just call them up.
He's just trying to call more attention to the ads to get them on TV. Otherwise, how did his wonderful letter reach the press in the first place?

These people disgust me.
