Get Out of Town Friends to Vote

Call or email your friends in different towns or states, and make sure there is nothing standing in the way of them voting for Democrats on November 7. If they have problems getting to the polls, use the following lists to help them find a way to vote.

Things You'll Need to Know Before You Contact a Friend

1. Election Dates. Voter registration and absentee ballot request deadlines, and if/when the state has early voting. You can find this information on their state page on Democrats.org.

2. Poll Hours. Hours the polls are open in your friend's state. The voting hours mandated by statute for 39 states are listed here. All states are listed on the U.S. Election Assistance Commission sheet that hasn't been updated since late 2004. Either source can and should be verified by checking with the state's Election office. Contact information can be found on the state page, near the bottom of the light blue Election 2006 box.

3. State Party Contact Information. Phone number or website of the state party. Contact information can be found on the state page, near the bottom of the light blue Election 2006 box.

4. County Democratic Party. To find the phone number or website of appropriate county Democratic Party, first you've got to know in what county your friend's hometown is located. That can be found with a simple google search of the city, state and the word "county." Once you've got the county name, an additional google search can provide you with contact information and potentially a website.

Things You Can Suggest to a Friend Who Can't Get to the Polls

1. Early Voting - Often when early voting is available there are weekend dates and times that can work for people unable to go during the week.

2. Absentee Voting - If your friend's state allows absentee voting, your friend can fill out a ballot when convenient and then just drop it in the mail.

3. Local Party Ride to the Polls - Your friend can use the contact information you found above for the state and county Democratic Party to call a local party to arrange for a ride to the polls on Election Day.
