Karl Rove is a shadowy puppet master whose words and actions have been hidden from the public for a long time. But now, in the waning hours of the Bush/Cheney regime, hints and leaks and facts and educated guesses are leaking out.
So: What Will Karl Do?
What will Karl do, as the various legal eagles tighten the net around his putative bosses and virtual finger puppets? He's losing his Majors, Lieutenants and Sargeants. The Generals are still free and unindicted, but that's next.
What Will Karl Do?
I suppose that depends on how deeply in the doo-doo Karl is. Is he still somebody's servant, or is he a free agent? Does he take orders, or just give them? If Karl is a smaller fish, he can give up his fellow fish and maybe some of the larger fish and mitigate the time and suffering he will endure. But if Karl is the true mastermind, and has broken with his "bosses", they can give HIM up, in order to obscure their part in the fiasco that is America today, or to negotiate a stalemate.
Things we've seen, heard, or guessed:
Karl dominates the election strategy. He twisted Foley's arm to run again, precipitating the election meltdown. A true act of desperation, one too many plates spinning on poles. Karl has reached his level of competence. If he has bosses, they will have taken note of this.
Karl recanted before Fitzgerald's grand jury, thereby escaping indictment on perjury. He could have done so just to protect himself, or to protect all the bigger fish as well as himself. Libby was sacrificed, for a considerable price, I would surmise, based on the lack of visible progress in the continuing investigation. Libby won't squeal. Yet. If things get hot enough so that Libby is finding he's giving up his freedom for nothing, he may reconsider that vow of silence.
Karl has one or maybe two increasingly whacked out puppets: Bush and Cheney, the unfunniest comedy duo the world has ever seen, to babysit, on top of everything else Karl does. Bush's handmaidens (Condi, Harriet, Laura, Karen and what's-her-name) are either pulled off to do other things, publicly disgraced, or not so privately ticked off, in Laura's case. So who's watching the baby, while Karl frantically tries to dig them all out of this mess?
Cheney had a heart attack when they stole the first election--signs of a vestigial conscience? How stable is his health?--not that his death would be a great loss at this point. Cheney is more of a liability than an asset nowadays. In fact, he probably always has been. If the beans spill on Cheney's doings in some prosecutable or blatantly scandalous way (not that his Halliburton financial connections aren't scandalous already, but the Joe Six-Pack public is indifferent to it all), if Cheney is exposed, he may do a Kenny Lay.
One has to wonder about Karl's health, as well. While adrenalin can be a great thrill, there are physical consequences. I'm sure Karl had plans to spend his money, write his memoirs, and gloat. Will he get that time?
So What Do You Think? WWKD?
On edit: I remember the 5th Handmaiden--a boy's best friend, his Mom! Well, Babs has been keeping a VERY low profile lately (she's probably the Matron to Laura's Prisoner), and now they'd dragged sistor Doro in to pinch hit.
Another Karl gaff: he's been outed as dissing the Fundies. Not good. Ship of Fools has sprung a leak.
