Jean Schmidt - Victoria Wulsin (OH-2) race is trending Democratic!
The OH-2 is on fire again and it looks like the district is motivated to shed the embarrassment known as "Mean" Jean Schmidt. This is shaping up to be an even better chance to take the old Rob Portman seat than the Hackett special election was! This is one of those seats that should be easy Republican, and yet isn't, under the current political climate. To take this seat in the most conservative congressional district in Ohio could only bode well for the Democratic trend nationwide.

They don't allow direct links, but go to http://www.majoritywatch.com/ and click on OH-2 (southwesternmost corner). In the most recent (Oct 2-10) poll, Wulsin is pulling ahead, 48-45%!

The strongest-trending-Democratic area in the OH-2 is Sharonville, so it's really time for the Wulsin campaign to get out the vote there. I haven't seen any Schmidt signs, even in the commercial district I work in. There were plenty of Schmidt signs in that neighborhood during the Hackett special and even during her '06 primary against McEwen.

This is fantastic news for the OH-2, for Ohio, for Democrats and for the country as a whole. Mean Jean Must Go, and it looks like in the waning days, if we push hard, we might just win this seat.

Things are exciting in the Vic Wulsin camp! If you can volunteer and/or give money, please go here:

Need further motivation to vote, volunteer, get a yard sign, or give money? Here you go. }(

6. Hackett has gone all-out for Dr. Wulsin.
He's a rock star in these parts. And Rep. Jack Murtha was here on Saturday for a Vic Wulsin Rally in Blue Ash!

Check out all of her endorsements:

10. I was there that night she called Murtha a coward...
I got there right after she said that and it was looking like a brawl was about to occur. It was ugly and the staffers/interns watching (even Reps) in the gallery were clearly frustrated and wanting a new direction or were at least ashamed. You could tell even then.

It was the only time I went to the gallery after work, but I saw there was to be a debate on the Iraq war and decided I might as well. I'm glad I did. It's an interesting conversation piece, though a shameful historical piece.

12. Fascinating that you were there.
I'm sure everyone at DU would love to hear more about that moment from someone who was actually present.

I remember watching it transpire live, and fireworks went off at DU. They closed the microphones on the House floor after a congressman (Ford-TN?) clamored for her comments to be taken down. It was a riveting, and shameful, moment in American politics.

Imagine my shame in having her serve as me representative. :-(

Tell us more, if you'd like... maybe even in a new thread. I'm fascinated!

And a belated Welcome to DU!!

14. a little more...
While I have a definite left-slant especially on social issues, I try to be balanced in my approach to issues and see both sides. That being said, that night was honestly sad. I mean that in the literal sense. I think many or most of us in the gallery (the vast majority were under the age of 20, I think) felt let down.

If I remember right, I walked in just as Harold Ford was rushing toward the Republicans ready to brawl. The night was interrupted constantly by long delays between debate and votes. I stayed until about 11-11:30pm if I remember right and I started worrying about being able to find transportation home if I waited until the final vote (which some were suggesting may come after 2am).

17. It must have been riveting.
Even when you have to witness hell break loose, it's an amazing time to be in the galley. Thank you for the details... to this day I wish there was video of Harold Ford rushing to strike Jean Schmidt's "cowards cut and run, Marines never do" comments.

I was in the Senate Galley for the first, and very controversial, $87 Billion Iraq Supplemental Debate. The infamous "I voted for it before I voted against it" crap they hung around Kerry's neck like an albatross.

I witnessed inspired speeches; Joe Biden's sticks out in memory for some reason; I should try to find it. It was late fall 2003. I wish more people trekked over to the galleys. It's better than theater. And it actually means something. Not that theater doesn't, mind you.

29. To be honest, I didn't think...
it would blow up like it did in the media the next day. I just thought it was another in a long chain of sad moments recently in our democracy. I was ashamed in our Congress, honestly, but never thought it'd get any attention. I was shocked to see it all on the TV the next day and over the last few months.

I think that was the real turning point because Democrats truly felt offended at that point. Starting in about October 2005, Democrats were much happier and Republicans were nervous. You can sense the political climate just by feeling the emotion among staffers on Capital Hill. It changes with the political wind and it changed swiftly last October. But again, the "Murtha Night" in the House was when Democrats finally rolled up their sleeves, in my opinion.

15. I have indeed relocated to an undisclosed location overseas
but made SURE that my ballot this election cycle remained in OHIO (our house sold Sept. 15th anyhow). Federal law states that wherever you last lived remains your legal state of residence for purposes of voting.

By next year we will probably have a house in either VA or PA again.

Jen, I sure hope that we turn OHIO BLUE!!!

I met some great people in Cincy, most Ohioans would still give you the shirt off their backs, unless they are the Hummer driving Mason-residing kind. No hard feelings, y'all!! I still love you hard working Dems, I am crossing every appendage that you boot the CONSCUM in November.

23. Beautiful
Doesn't Germany get awfully cold during the winter. I relocated to Seattle recently and have a view almost as lovely but the temps rarely go below 40 and snow is a rarity. I don't like living in the red zone just outside the uber-blue Seattle but it is purty.

That's why so many Germans migrated to Washington State, it looks like home to them, and feels like it too! We're at 47N - 11E, probably closer to Vancouver and Montreal's weather. Cool, dry summers and moderate winters, with snow for skiing in the southern Alpenvorland, where I am.

20. Mean Jean's affiliation with Right to Life, in and of itself, is enough to
recommend her ouster, but that slam on Murtha was inexcusable.

She's a far right extremist with a withered heart and limited range.

There are only two others I would love to see ousted. Santorum and Frist and I hear Frist is retiring, probably so he can make a bid for the presidency in 2008. Yeah, like Catkiller Frist, the sociopath, video diagnostician from hell doesn't have a snowball's chance in that run.
