What? You say that U.S. warplanes killed a senior Taliban commander? Sorry...my mistake! Looks like Señor Taliban is still wanted...dead or alive.

NATO says air strike kills senior Taliban fighter

KABUL (Reuters) - U.S. warplanes killed a senior Taliban commander in an air strike in the violence-racked southern province of Uruzgan on Tuesday,
NATO said.

Murat Kurnaz attends an interview with Radio Bremen TV in Bremen, Germany, August 31, 2006. Germany is investigating claims by Kurnaz, a Turkish man with German residency, who says he was abused by German soldiers in Afghanistan before being sent to the U.S. Guantanamo Bay prison camp, his lawyer said on Tuesday. (Radio Bremen TV/Handout/Reuters)

"The aircraft engaged a known mid-level Taliban commander in the vicinity of Bagh-Khosak in the Khod Valley with three 500 pound bombs, killing him and 10 to 15 additional Taliban militants," the alliance said in a statement.

It added the dead had been involved in ambushes of Afghan soldiers and troops from the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).

Mountainous Uruzgan is a stronghold of the Taliban, ousted by U.S.-led forces in 2001, and next to Kandahar province, the birthplace of the hardline Islamist group.

The Taliban have regrouped since their ouster and this has been the bloodiest year since 2001, with more than 3,000 people, including about 150 foreign soldiers, killed in fighting across the country.

1. I thought we were going to bringing the Taliban into the process.
Perhaps killing their leaders is not the best way to go about this.

3. do as we say, not as we do.
boy, those long distance ID systems sure have improved. Let's see, your average Afghani weighs 150 lbs. we tossed 1500 lbs of high explosives on top of him, and we STILL could guarantee that we killed a particular individual.

Were his body parts tested for DNA. I wonder? Or is this Act II, Scene 3 of Rove's victory march in the Muddle East?

2. I bought weed from that guy when I was living in the dorms!
Drug purchases really do fund terrorism!

Also, how does an aircraft engage a Taliban leader? I have a vision of James Bond flying a fighter when this Taliban guy with a jetpack and a rocket launcher bursts out of a cave, fires missiles at Bond and disables his plane's weapons, forcing Bond to go wing-walking with his pistol to take down the evil terrorist and then jump off the plane before it explodes.

5. Was he the Number 2 guy in the Taliban?
We seem to kill a lot of those. If I were a member of the Taliban, I would refuse promotions.
