Money pours in for Madrid, Wilson

WASHINGTON — The campaigns of Rep. Heather Wilson, Albuquerque Republican, and her Democratic challenger, Attorney General Patricia Madrid, have spent more than $2 million to win your vote on Nov. 7, but political parties' special interest groups are pouring even more money into the 1st Congressional District Race.

The latest intervention is by a group with ties to former House Minority Leader Tom DeLay and the Swift Boat group of veterans who attacked the war record of Sen. John Kerry, Massachusetts Democrat, in the 2004 presidential campaign.

Reports filed last week with the Federal Election Commission show that Americans for Honesty on Issues has spent $165,000 on a television ad accusing Madrid of wanting "your taxes super-sized."

The group received $2 million from Houston developer Bob Perry, who also funded the Swift Boat group. The group is led by Sue Walden, a Houston political consultant with close ties to DeLay according to the New York Times.

And in Colorado

Donor To 'Swift Boat' Ad Helps Buy 7th Dist.

(AP) The major donor behind the "Swift Boat" ads attacking Sen. John Kerry's 2004 presidential bid has jumped into Colorado's 7th Congressional District race, financing a television spot accusing the Democratic candidate of being soft on immigration.

A group called Americans for Honesty on Issues purchased the $246,000, 30-second ad with financing from Texas homebuilder Bob J. Perry, the Rocky Mountain News reported Tuesday, citing Federal Election Commission filings.

The ad says, "Ed Perlmutter favors an earned path to citizenship for illegal immigrants."

Perlmutter faces Republican Rick O'Donnell in the election to replace Bob Beauprez in the north-Denver district. Beauprez, also a Republican, is giving up the seat to run for governor.

1. What an industry that sprung up around the RW noise machine in the 90s!!!
How the newsmedia chose to allow them to shape our elections, one would have to conclude the newsmedia is COMPLICIT with the RW machine.

2. They would have to resort to this.
The Repubs did everything else to portray Bush shill Wilson as opposing the him on key issues. Obviously, it didn't work.

4. Another sign of Wilson's troubles,
and from a conservative:

HOUSE BELLWETHER?
A well-connected Republican source who was running through the most competitive House races this morning said, "If we lose Heather Wilson, we lose the House." The explanation was that Wilson has faced tough reelection races in the past and so knows what she's up against. She's aggressive, knows how to fight for her seat, and raises plenty of money. The reasoning is that if she is knocked off this year, there is little hope for incumbents facing their first real challenge. At the end of September, polls had Wilson tied with New Mexico's attorney general Patricia Madrid. Recent polls give Madrid an edge of about 8 points.
