WASHINGTON, Oct. 18, 2006 — President Bush said in a one-on-one interview with ABC News' George Stephanopoulos that a newspaper column comparing the current fighting in Iraq to the 1968 Tet offensive in Vietnam, which was widely seen as the turning point in that war, might be accurate.

Stephanopoulos asked whether the president agreed with the opinion of columnist Tom Friedman, who wrote in The New York Times today that the situation in Iraq may be equivalent to the Tet offensive in Vietnam almost 40 years ago.

"He could be right," the president said, before adding, "There's certainly a stepped-up level of violence, and we're heading into an election."

"George, my gut tells me that they have all along been trying to inflict enough damage that we'd leave," Bush said. "And the leaders of al Qaeda have made that very clear. Look, here's how I view it. First of all, al Qaeda is still very active in Iraq. They are dangerous. They are lethal. They are trying to not only kill American troops, but they're trying to foment sectarian violence. They believe that if they can create enough chaos, the American people will grow sick and tired of the Iraqi effort and will cause government to withdraw."

1. I honestly believe he didn't hear or maybe understand the question
Maybe Bush thought The Tet Offensive was how we won the Vietnam War?

Or else he just wasn't paying attention.

2. When is Bush accepting comparison's of the invasion of Iraq to...
the old Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan.

The US was still a superpower after Viet Nam but after Iraq/Afghanistan, I don't think the US will a superpower. Time will tell.

Back in 2003, I thought Iraq will probably become a quagmire like Viet Nam, now I think Iraq is like the old Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan. ie The strategic blunder that brings down a superpower.

4. Does Mr. Bush Jr. have any sense of history?
Vietnam was almost in a perpetual war for hundreds of years starting with China, then the French, Japan who kicked out the French, the French came back then handed off to the war to the U.S.A. Of course, the U.S.S.R. was aiding North Vietnam when the U.S.A. was there in the sixties. The story to this is, once the U.S.A. removed ground forces in 1973, South Vietnam fell in 1975 and Vietnam became a single state. Attempting to learn how to live in peace, Vietnam is now turning into a capitalistic society and moving toward a democracy. This society is finally getting a chance to what it needs to do for itself and is seceding.

5. Bush still thinks al Qaeda is behind most of the violence.
He really is unfit to be commander-in-chief.

6. Remember how these guys perceive the Vietnam War
Though they sloughed off their service for "other priorities" and to work on GOP campaigns, their revisionist history is that Vietnam was a worthy and winnable war that was messed up by Commie Kerry and Hanoi Jane.
