Senate Democrats (in Safe Seats) Sitting on $84 Million in Cash on Hand!"Most of you read or heard about Carville's and Cook's contention that Democrats could bolster their chances at engineering an electoral tsunami by borrowing between $5-$10 million dollars for competitive House races. Also, Republicans expect to have a $55 million cash advantage heading into the final three weeks of the campaign. Kos's recent post about DCCC dues got me wondering how much money Senate and House Democrats are actually sitting on.
What exactly qualifies as a 'safe seat'? Obviously my categorization is subjective, but I think we can all agree that Democrats coasting to blow out wins in '06 (25 points or more) or incumbents who have been elected atleast twice or those in the bluest of blue seats should be counted as occupying 'safe seats'. Turns out, Democrats who meet this criteria have $84 million dollars in their collective warchests."
"Are there good reasons for sitting on all this money? I know very little about the actual mechanics of running a campaign, and therefore can't tell if those Democrats in 'safe seats' need all the money they currently possess. Still,
tapping these Democrats for a fifth of their current campaign accounts would give the committees $17 million that they currently don't have. Can these Democrats be persuaded to break off a sizable chunk of their warchest and make it available to the DCCC (or the DSCC)? "You need to scroll down to see the chart he made. As with the House Dems which I wrote about in another thread:
