serious Q: is it LEGAL to videotape myself voting? or the polling place? |
|
as a regular joe sixpack citizen, are there any restrictions to me filming myself voting on a diebold machine, just to be sure?
serious but maybe stupid question.

1. Generally speaking, no |
|
Most jurisdictions prohibit bringing cameras or other recording devices into a polling place. The reasoning is to help keep the votes of others secret, and to prevent photos etc. from being used to intimidate other voters.
If you had a small digital camera that you kept in your pocket until you were within the voting booth, or if your camera-enabled cell phone should come out just before you hit the "Save" button, however.....

2. It won't prove a thing |
|
since those machines are unverifiable. Your vote is anonymous and can't be traced back. They wouldn't do that if they could.
Vote flipping programs that we've seen only flip that vote when the final result is tallied. You won't see it anywhere on the machine when you vote.
Is it too late to get an absentee ballot where you are?

the last time I went to vote there were cops outside, the poll workers had called them in because someone was videotaping inside the facility. I live in a very liberal district and I trust the poll workers. I'm sure what the videotaper was doing was wrong.

I don't know the answer but as a poll worker it might make me a little nervous. Not from the standpoint of me being taped not doing my job, but more of why would someone be doing that and are they coming back with more people to blow my brains out? Call me paranoid, I'm not proud!! Peace, Kim

Some cameras are easy to disguise. What are they gonna do - frisk you before you vote?

did it as a little documentary. it was cute. no one stopped me. i had my handheld in line... plain as day. it was great.
i emailed the final quicktime to some relatives -- i've long since lost the file. wonder if anyone still has it.
