I was asked if I supported "Extraordinary rendition" by a....
Edited on Fri Oct-20-06 01:14 PM by lonehalf
..fellow Democrat at a recent party meeting meeting.

I said no.

In the General Discussion we asked for a show of hands.

Most people there didn't even know what we were talking about.

There were appx. 120 people there and "No" got 17 votes - "Yes" got 1.

Then we told the meeting that President Clinton was the person who approved it. It is even listed as one of his greatest achievements on Wikipedia.

Here's the link: http://www.fas.org/irp/offdocs/pdd39.htm

You should have seen the confusion. It was funny.

I bet that DUers don't even support "Extraordinary rendition".

3. Class... listen up! Extraordinary Rendition 101
Extraordinary rendition is an American extra-judicial procedure which involves the sending of untried criminal suspects, suspected terrorists or alleged supporters of groups which the US Government considers to be terrorist organizations, to countries other than the United States for imprisonment and interrogation.

6. Yes, sadly, it was approved by the Clinton administration.
I don't see where it's listed as one of his "greatest achievements" though.

7. Maybe I shouldn't have used the work "achievements".
It is listed as an "Initiative" though.

8. I see nothing in your link that talks about 'extraordinary rendition'.

It deals with the return of suspected terrorists to the US:

Return of Indicted Terrorists to the U.S. for Prosecution: We shall vigorously apply extraterritorial statutes to counter acts of terrorism and apprehend terrorists outside of the United States. When terrorists wanted for violation of U.S. law are at large overseas, their return for prosecution shall be a matter of the highest priority and shall be a continuing central issue in bilateral relations with any state that harbors or assists them. Where we do not have adequate arrangements, the Departments of State and Justice shall work to resolve the problem, where possible and appropriate, through negotiation and conclusion of new extradition treaties. (U)

If we do not receive adequate cooperation from a state that harbors a terrorist whose extradition we are seeking, we shall take appropriate measures to induce cooperation. Return of suspects by force may be effected without the cooperation of the host government, consistent with the procedures outlined in NSD-77, which shall remain in effect. (S)

Rendition did exist prior to Bush/Gongazles' New Paradigm which began after 9/11. Before that, it was very rarelly used and controlled.

Scheuer claimed that “there was a legal process” undergirding these early renditions. Every suspect who was apprehended, he said, had been convicted in absentia. Before a suspect was captured, a dossier was prepared containing the equivalent of a rap sheet. The C.I.A.’s legal counsel signed off on every proposed operation. Scheuer said that this system prevented innocent people from being subjected to rendition.

15. I try to be realistic.
I am a Georgia Democrat.

I have been all of my adult life.

I sat at a Walgreen's counter with Clarence Mayfield and Hosea Johnson in Savannah in the 60s.

I once got fired for supporting civil rights. I should have asked for time off, not just take it; that gave them a reason.

ANd now I work for my local county Committee at lease five hours a week.

And I don't see anything wrong with the posts you listed.

If you do please reply to them and tell me what your complaint is.

Thanks

11. What is your primary and secondary reason for posting this -
I don't get what you're trying to say or prove.

I can say - the statistical response to your question to the audience was interesting whether or not it was scientific.
