Bush, VP Play Up Lieberman's Woes

WASHINGTON -- President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney are using Connecticut Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman as their shining example of what's wrong with the Democratic Party, routinely citing his stance on Iraq as the reason Democrats have "purged" the Connecticut senator.

Bush twice brought up Lieberman on Thursday - first at an afternoon rally in La Plume, Pa., and again at an early evening Virginia campaign event.

The Bush routine is the same one he and Cheney have been using on the campaign trail for about a month: List the horrors of a Democratic Party takeover of Congress and then talk about how cruel party officials have ousted Lieberman, now running for re-election as an independent after losing the Aug. 8 Democratic primary.

"This summer, we saw what happens when a Democrat rejects his party's doctrine of cut and run," Bush said in both Thursday stops. "Sen. Joe Lieberman, a three-term Democrat from Connecticut, supports completing the mission in Iraq, supports victory in Iraq."
