Rice doubts North Korea nuclear pledge, sees 'escalation'1 hour, 1 minute ago
MOSCOW (AFP) - US Secretary of State
Condoleezza Rice has cast doubt on a reported apology by North Korean
leader Kim Jong-Il for carrying out a nuclear test and said the secretive
state wanted an "escalation of tensions."
"I don't know whether or not Kim Jong-Il said any such thing," Rice told
journalists accompanying her on a flight from Beijing to Moscow Saturday.
"But the Chinese, in a fairly thorough briefing about the talks, said nothing
about such an apology for having launched a test," Rice said.
Rice looked clearly exasperated over repeated questions about the reports,
which overshadowed her tour of Asia aimed at rallying support for a UN
resolution imposing strong sanctions against Pyongyang.
"The North Koreans would like to see an escalation of tensions rather than the
kind of matter-of-fact, effective implementation of the resolution that has the
potential to have a real effect on their activities," Rice said.
