From the "Politics is Local" File

GOP challenger Vernon Robinson has used illegal immigration as the centerpiece of his often contentious campaign. During the debates, he accused (Brad) Miller of voting against policies that would strengthen border security and protect jobs (although Miller voted for 'the fence').

"If we don't (win), one day one of these al-Qaida members is going to show up in New York, Washington or Raleigh with a thermonuclear device and is going to kill millions of Americans," Robinson said in a debate hosted by WRAL-TV.

Robinson, whose campaign has produced a series of eyebrow-raising advertisements, originally declined to participate in the debate hosted by WRAL. He noted Friday that news anchor David Crabtree, who moderated the debate, is a deacon in Miller's church.

"I understand that your church supports the ordination of homosexual clergy and that is why you are taking this ridiculous position," Robinson said.

This is the fight for the 13th District parts of which stretch from Raleigh to Greensboro; covers a lot of ground. Brad Miller-D is the incumbent.
