Barron's: GOP will hold Congress

Survivor!
By Jim McTague

JUBILANT DEMOCRATS SHOULD RECONSIDER their order for confetti and noisemakers. The Democrats, as widely reported, are expecting GOP-weary voters to flock to the polls in two weeks and hand them control of the House for the first time in 12 years -- and perhaps the Senate, as well. Even some Republicans privately confess that they are anticipating the election-day equivalent of Little Big Horn. Pardon our hubris, but we just don't see it.

Our analysis -- based on a race-by-race examination of campaign-finance data -- suggests that the GOP will hang on to both chambers, at least nominally....

5. The only way GOP wins is if they rig it. PERIOD.
No way they can do other than cheat and of course they know this.

7. Barrons is a waste of space
Of all the financial rags Barrons has the honor of being the most consistently out of touch.

8. It would be great if this turned out to be like the COLLIER's poll in 1936
Where they only polled people who had telephones, and as a result predicted a landslide win for Alf Landon.

9. It was the Literary Digest that made that idiotic "prediction".
>
>
This election is notable for the Literary Digest poll, which was based on 10 million questionnaires mailed to readers and potential readers; over two million were returned. The Literary Digest, which had correctly predicted the winner of the last 5 elections, announced in its October 31 issue that Landon would be the winner with 370 electoral votes. The cause of this mistake is believed to be due to improper sampling: more Republicans subscribed to the Literary Digest than Democrats.

12. I hope there was no "GOTCHA!!" sensed in my correction.
I value this DU community far too well for that. The truth of the matter is this: I'm in the age group (born in 1930) that's been fed such factoids ad nauseum. (But by force of habit, I Googled it just to be sure.)

Regards, pnorman
PS: Here's a nice cheery Halloween photo I just 'lifted' from another DUer:

That pumpkin was submitted by "proud2Blib" on another thread, just a short while ago. I predict it'll be metastasizing like crazy by sunup.

Apparently, it has! I just checked that image, and saw where it's been reduced to a thumbnai!! Dang!!! I think I saved the full-sized image somewhere, so I'll start looking.

By that standard the GOP would have never taken the House in 1994.

16. Barron's is owned by Dow Jones -- like the Wall Street Journal
And its playpen of an Editorial Page.

Not that it means much. Their "never wrong" poll has been "wrong" in the past 2 (stolen) presidential elections.

They could also just be trying to stave off a market crash. This is the season for it.

22. Barrons is consistantly wrong on just about everything
If Barrons thinks that the Rethugs are going to keep both houses, I'd say the Dems are a shoe-in for the House at least.

28. Thom Hartmann was discussing this tonight on AA.
It has entirely to do with $$$ and not polling. The disturbing aspect is that they are right more frequently than I'm comfortable with right now. It also gives the Rs cover to cheat in a big way. Very disturbing.
