Menendez opens 9 point lead on Kean
October 22, 2006
In New Jersey, Menendez Pulls Away from Kean
In New Jersey's U.S. Senate race, a new Monmouth University/Gannett New Jersey poll has Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) up by nine points over challenger Tom Kean Jr. (R), 48% to 39%.

Key finding: "Menendez's voters are more committed to him, as 37 percent of likely voters said they were sure they would vote for Menendez, up nine points since September. Fewer than 3 in 10 said they were sure they would vote for Kean, unchanged since September."

4. Yeah baby, yeah!
My area (urban Newark/Essex County) was blanketed with signs yesterday that read: STOP BUSH! Vote November 7th!

If we pull this off, I think we in NJ deserve the liberal bragging rights for consistently, since the bush coup, sending a message that we're not buying it!

Delivering Essex votes bigtime may end up delivering the state to Bob.

My rep is Donald Payne Sr. so I am working with Tom Wyka, running against Rodney Frelinhguysen in Morris county NJ11.

5. Menendez has been running great ads...
Always talking about Kean JUNIOR. Constantly saying JUNIOR = BUSH, favors the Iraq war, while Menendez actually voted against it. Side by side pictures of Bush and JUNIOR.

Just pounding away with the same message. Very smart.

And the Dem Senate committee has also been running ads, saying Kean JUNIOR is the same as Bush.

Meanwhile it's intersting to compare the HRC ads which are all positive, warm and fuzzy, not even mentioning her opponent. "New Yorkers took a chance on Hillary. And, boy has she come through." is the final line. Another very smart ad.

7. Good news those ads tying Kean to Bush must be helping
Negative but not personal. They stick to the issues whereas Kean has been pounding the personal.

Let's hope this keeps up.

10. As I said, the spread in Monmouth and Ocean Counties
tells you the election results. The constant commercials - really pathetic allegations and innuendos against Menendez - that are saturating the NY/NJ market are working strongly against Kean Jr. Now that the buys are already made, the polls will start to show strong numbers in Menendez's favor.

17. the Kean commercial with the audio tape is horrible
you can't even make out what they're saying on it, and there's so much static in the background you don't want to try to listen.

Menendez isn't a great candidate, and by all rights should be losing this race, but if he pulls it off it'll be because of Bush and New Jersey's hatred of him, and anything connected with him.

11. Whewwwwwww.....
That's a bit of a relief. This is a bit too close for comfort, but I never really doubted NJ would stay with us.

It's good to see one of the repukes' "best chances for a gain" is gone. Their best and only chance to take a seat from us is to get Lieberman to caucus with them...

18. I had a feeling this was going to happen
IMO, it'll be a bigger victory on election day than what the polls reflect. New Jersey Dems have an excellent GOTV operation.
