I saw it, did anyone else?
This morning on DU, I saw a list of 300 servicemen killed in the ammo dump explosion in Iraq. It was locked, no attribution given that I remember. Was this my imagination or did it disappear? Was I dreaming? There were names, units etc. True or not? I would like to hear where this came from. It certainly would have been quite an effort to compile this list if it was a hoax and if it was, that is very cruel, but then, so is this whole war.

...but I believe the mods removed it because it was unsubstantiated?

It received 5 votes, but was removed shortly after (the link is still on the greatest page)...

17. No, Sir, It Is Not
All sites featuring the story are classed as unreliable conspiracy sites or bigotted sites. The claims are wholly bogus.

about these explosions. I'll keep my eyes open.

3. Well, certainly after seeing the footage of that ammo dump blast
You'd expect, sadly, for there to be a lot of bodybags filled. I mean, on the video it almost looks like a small nuke went off

4. Given the size of that explosion, 300 deaths is certainly possible.
Edited on Sun Oct-22-06 10:29 AM by Divernan
If the govt. thinks they can keep a lid on this, they are crazy. Wonder what kind of outrageous spin they will put on the coverup. Wasn't the original spin that there were NO deaths? As to the body bag reference above, that blast wouldn't have left much in the way of human remains. Maybe the gubmint will parcel out the deaths to subsequent blasts - an IED here, a car bomb there. Put a few charred remains into various caskets and tell the families not to open them.

5. It seems any news reports on the ammo dump explosions and
...related U.S. deaths have been blacked out. I have found nothing which even speculates on how Americans were killed or wounded from that event earlier this month

6. The source for the article came from TBR, Brian Harring
I got it many days ago in an email from him. I believe it was debunked and am told Harring is not a reliable source. I'm guessing that's why the thread disappeared.

11. KOS says site is a scam
So, to sum up to this point. TBRNews.org is a scam website. It promotes conspiracy theories and made-up stories as truth. Why? Well, I have my own theories on this. The theory I like best is a comment posted to this story from 2002 and can be found here:

7. Do you recall if fatalities were from one particular unit & if so, where?
That is were they regular Army, national guard and what part of the country were they from? I can understand not posting specific names/IDs until the military has released that info - and had notified the families. But I think it's legit to discuss this story as to the size of the explosions, the location, and what the official govt. story currently is. Certainly if there is a news blackout, it gives the appearance of being a monumentally bad piece of news.

12. My first thought was "good lord, look at this: I signed out of DU.
Seeing the list was a bad way to start the day. Perhaps one of the others who saw the write-up has more specifics. It was far more than just a name. The list was alphabetical, with additional information next to each name.

Update on Ammo Explosion
(This story relates locally because the ammo dump was at the base where Fort Lewis Strykers are living. See David Hardt's update below).
.......
The base' essential services were not disrupted, and all life support remains in place. No injuries were reported.

(From a Multinational Corps Iraq news release.)

Did a search on 'plain' Google instead of Google News.
Sorry, I don't have time to look over all the hits.

8. I Missed Cnn & EVERYTHING About The Attacks....
Been very very busy campaigning and marching locally for out candidates. Took today off to rest my weary body!! It's so HOT here in The District Cruella that I actually changed clothes two times yesterday! Marching in a local parade, came home... fed the rest of the family and went back early last evening to man a booth and promote the candidates. Monday it will be sign holding time.

I sure wish there was a link on some of this! I stopped watching so much of CNN & MSNBC a long time ago opting for LINK & FSTV instead. Maybe Amy will have something Monday.

If anyone has information and it can be posted I would really appreciate it!

Trying so hard to elect Christine Jennings and David Shapiro and others, but those 2 are CRITICAL! Talking with Shapiro yesterday and we all have "butterflies" and can't wait til it's over! They both seem to be ahead, but then this is a District where opponents have a LOT of money!!!

9. Here's link to video of explosion - there HAD to be casualties
We know that the military had to have had a large contingent guarding this facility in Baghdad.
www.ibctoday.com/News/ViewNewsItem.aspx?newsItemId=7978&rootVideoPanelType=2&rootRegionId=3

The video/report is from the Associated Press. It shows a series of explosions over a 40 second period - one of them at around 35 seconds was incredibly huge. The blasts were felt miles away. Happened on October 11.

21. why did there "have" to be casualties?
Sites like this facility are typically set up in a way that will minimize the risk of casualties in the event they are hit. Its entirely plausible that there were no serious casualties from this facilities blowing up. Given that US service personnel are in regular contact, via email, phone etc. with their families, the notion that there could have been massive casualties from this event, but no one knows about doesn't withstand scrutiny.

10. If it is true and the government is covering it up War with Iran is close
They need a terrible attack from Iran with numerous US casualties. They now have the casualties so all they need is an event. Look for a missle launch from Iran striking somewhere in Iraq and killing these soldiers. What other explanation for covering up such a large death toll?

I'm not gonna call paranoid on this scenario. We know they manipulated the death numbers/stats in Nam - this will be nothing new.

I have never heard that they manipulated US body count. Nothing would surprise me though.

14. I saw it and I've read other reports yesterday and the day before

news is being hidden.

the Iraqis living close to the area probably could report what they know, unless they could be killed for talking.

they couldn't talk to the US but they could talk to other countries reporters.

19. It's too bad there's nolonger an "ask the administrators" forum.
I've noticed that some topics come up which, for various reasons are not acceptable at DU. Like a certain sex scandal that happened during the 80's and this. Problem is, many DUers don't have a way to know what's a forbidden topic because they don't go through all the messages or take the time do do an advanced search and root through a dozen locked threads to piece together why a particular topic is not acceptable at DU.

And it causes confusion and frustration as a number of people touch on the same topic over the course of days or even weeks only to have the thread locked or disappear.

Having some central place where people could look, like the old "Ask the Administrators" forum woud prevent alot of this. People get spooked because they see threads disappearing and start becoming suspicious- when there's no need to be.

20. Things Are Pretty Open, My Friend
One the several threads that have popped up over this, members have generally answered with particulars on the "TBR" site, demonstrating that its character is widely known to the membership. Threads that are locked over such matters generally are locked with the reason for the lock. It is true that we do rely on members looking into sites they cite, and expect them to act responsibly in linking to sites that even casual examination should disclose to be questionable in their accuracy and views.
