AmericaBlog (Video): Breaking scandal in Nevada involving, of course, a Republican
This time it's the governor's candidate, Republican Congressman Jim Gibbons, the guy who was accused last week of attacking a young woman in a parking lot. Today we find out that the very anti-immigration Gibbons had an illegal alien working for him for years, and even hid her in the basement.

It's 8 minutes and 24 seconds of local news in Nevada, that is a HUGE story, no one does a story that long.

18. Not necessarily........
there are a number of other things that come into play here. Number one, he's a Republican. They're all hypocrites and other Republicans will vote for him without batting an eyelash. Number two, Republican "friendly" voting machines can make any vote deficit disappear.

The, "do as I say, not as I do", Republicans once again get their dicks caught in a big wringer. Let's hope that the election is a landslide for the (D) or, as usual, the Republican candidate will get away with stealing the election.

What an asshole that guy is! :eyes: He and his big-haired hypocrite wife should be tossed in jail.

3. This should effectively make Gibbons toast in a sane world...
He was not going to get my vote anyhow, but I will be sure to rub this one in Republicans' faces tomorrow at work. I wonder if they shall vote for the little bastard now that they see he has only been paying them lip service?

Recommended.

19. But it happened soooooooo long ago..............
what's past is past and we shouldn't hold it against him. :sarcasm: Unless his name was Bill Clinton, then the statute of limitations for blame and derision is immediately rescinded. Old Bill can be blamed for hanging jesus on the cross. Freaking hypocrites! :banghead:

4. Part of the problem
The Republicans want to stop illegal immigration, yet it seems that some of their own add to the problem with things like this.

6. Bingo!
And I bet that many more Republicans hire illegal immigrants, but the Democrats won't go fishing to find out who because turning in illegal immigrants makes them squeamish. That's why Democrats lose elections. They have to be prepared to go for the jugular vein. Their opponent's jugular vein, that is.

8. cheap labor Republican. Where does he stand on raising the minimum wage? He
keeps a bargain-basement worker on staff and probably pays them SUB-minimum wage.

10. What makes you think they want to stop illegal immigration?
The party of corporate greed loves to exploit the low wages of illegal immigrants. Pro-labor Democrats are the ones more likely to do something useful to control illegal immigration.

I'm sure Wal-Mart and Tyson chicken are not going to support anyone who may restrict illegal immigration.

5. Freepers are already disgusted with immigrant issues
They've been bitterly disappointed with Republicans NOT threatening illegals with firing squads.

This will depress them even further.

I'd say that'd sink him faster than an immigrant thing.

12. ASSAULT ALLEGATION: Waitress to tell her story
Woman schedules news conference 'to stand up for herself,' attorney says

The Las Vegas cocktail waitress who told police Republican gubernatorial candidate Jim Gibbons assaulted her in a parking garage is scheduled to hold a news conference today to tell her side of the story, according to one of her lawyers.

<snip>

Chrissy Mazzeo called police on Oct. 13 claiming Gibbons had pinned her against the wall of a parking garage and threatened her after she rebuffed his advances over drinks at McCormick & Schmick's restaurant near Paradise and Flamingo roads.

The following day, Mazzeo told police she didn't want to pursue the matter " 'cause of who he is and I just don't want to go up against something like that."

Gibbons has said that after a perfectly decent conversation, he walked Mazzeo to a parking structure where she was trying to find her truck.

<snip>

"We're basically going to respond to Mr. Gibbons' press conference and the allegations he's made, and Chrissy will take questions," Winckler said. "She will confirm her side."

The party of family values strikes again! Wonder where Mrs. Gibbons was when he was having drinks and flirting with Mazzeo, then walking her to her car? You're right, this will sink him faster because some voters will turn against him even if they believe an assault was not attempted.

But the immigrant thing will sink him more deeply, I think. Note that Mazzeo has so far declined to press charges. But I doubt The Tax Man will exhibit as much forgiveness.

9. Hokey smokes, Gibbons broke tax laws!
Edited on Wed Oct-25-06 09:48 AM by Lasher
There's proof he had a paid employee and he didn't deduct income and payroll taxes or pay employer taxes. It's no secret that in some parts of the country, laws against hiring illegal aliens are not enthusiastically enforced. But tax evasion?

Exclusive: Former Employee Says Gibbons Knew of Her Illegal Status

It is illegal to knowingly employ an undocumented alien. It's also illegal to employ such a person, pay them under the table, and then fail to pay employer taxes.

Sandoval says she worked for Jim Gibbons and his wife Dawn for several years, starting in 1987, and that the family has tried to cover it up. It's a story pregnant with political implications.

<snip>

Immigration attorney Vincenta Montoya is representing Sandoval. She said, "Eight hundred dollars a month at ten hours a day, fifty hours per week, that's about $4 an hour. Plus, social security was not paid. Disability was not paid. Workers comp was not paid. Taxes weren't paid. I think the Gibbons got a very good deal for very low money."

http://www.klas-tv.com/Global/story.asp?S=5585256

It looks like Gibbons is going to try to say that Sandoval never worked for him full time, as in 40 hours a week or more. I think employer taxes don't apply when part time employees are involved.

Edit: Hokey smokes again! You can view the employment agreement at the above website. It's proof of full time employment because it specifies the hours Sandoval was to have worked, 8 AM to 5:30 PM Monday thru Saturday. And Gibbons' signature is on the document!

Let me tell you how it will be
There's one for you, nineteen for me
'Cause I'm the taxman,
yeah, I'm the taxman

Hiding her in the basement. She's good enough to take care of his children but they hide her becasue their crappy friends would bust them. One thing for sure, letting her go was a baaaaaad idea.

15. Not a surprise
Here Bob Corker when he owned a business in the 80's in Memphis he hired illegal immigrants too and now he's on the anti bandwagon. Same thing it seems.

Maybe this will help Nevada voters decide to vote for Democrats across the board and Carter will beat Ensign.
