1. I agree
People are learning from the last time I think. Here in TN I've been seeing the local news on early voting and tons of people are showing up. I think this is good news in general for the American public because it's usually not this big of a deal. Are there any reports about how canidates are doing with early voting or are they keeping the numbers until election night?

3. The ballots are not counted until election day
However, in the 2004 election I crunched the numbers for FL and Kerry beat Bush in Early Voting that year.

4. hard to say if it favors one or the other
Big turnout in 04 did not favor the Dems.

7. Early Voting turnouts did favor DEMS
The vote totals for EV, ABS and Election Day voting are calulated seperately. The DEMS do well in EV.

6. How does early voting work?
In NH, we have absentee ballot voting by mail, but I don't know what you guys mean when you talk about "early voting". Do you actually go to the polls? What is the reason for it?

8. Here in GA
they have one central polling place open for a county IIRC. I usually wait till the official polling day.

9. In Texas, early voting means...
We actually do go to the polls. Except we don't vote at our normal precinct locations, but at special locations around the county. (For example, Monday I voted at a supermarket.) The idea with early voting is that it's more convenient for many people, since you can vote at any early voting location in the county, over an extended period. (For this election, EV started Monday and continues until the Friday before the election.) And it cuts down on Election Day lines.

10. Hmm ...
I like the idea but I am suspicious of all those ballots hanging around the supermarket for 2 weeks, What is security of those things like? Any idea?

19. Well, they don't hang around there for two weeks
The results (we have E-Slate machines) are brought to the county at the end of every day).

12. EV is an option in about 1/3 of the country
It's just like regular voting except instead of voting at your precinct, you have to go to the local BOE office or a handful of satellite locations.

17. A few big advantages to EV
is that you have to vote in person, so it's harder for someone else to steal your ID and vote for you.

If there is a problem with your registration, then you still have time to correct it.

There's less ballot spoilage because if there is a problem you know right away and correct it. Or if a machine malfunctions and they have to stop the voting, you can come back another day.

Absentee voting has been fraught with all kinds of problems and is a major source of voting mining by the repugs. That's why they love inactive voters.

Voting on Election Day is risky because of the problems with the machines and major problems that people are encountering with their voter's registrations.

So if you can, GO EV.

18. You don't have to apply to early vote.
Edited on Wed Oct-25-06 08:56 AM by 1932
For abs. ballots, you have to apply (and some states require that you have a reason for voting absentee).

Early voting has no restrictions or conditions or prior steps. You show up early, you vote your precinct's ballot. You're done.

15. All I did was google 'Early Voting'
Select News instead of Web and search.

I'll post more later, with links next time.
