Analysts say Davis gains momentum amid anti-GOP backlash

TALLAHASSEE· After a slow start, Jim Davis is getting the Democratic base fired up and Charlie Crist is hampered by a national anti-Republican surge. That combination means the Florida governor's race is becoming a tight contest in the final stretch.

Political analysts from both parties say the past three weeks have been among the best for Davis since he began his run for governor more than a year ago.

Bill and Hillary Clinton recently held separate appearances and fundraisers for Davis. His campaign is running a barrage of television ads in South Florida and other key markets. Polls are showing he has cut Crist's lead, with one survey showing Davis within striking distance of becoming the frontrunner.

"Yes, the race is probably narrowing," said Geoffrey Becker, a Republican campaign consultant. "But it's not so much because of any big excitement about Jim Davis. It's because voters, especially some independents, are excited about kicking out Republicans from Congress."

"The mood is changing in Davis' favor," said Alan Olinsky, who sits on the Palm Beach Democratic executive committee. "People are fed up with everything in the country, and Charlie Crist is going to pay the price."

1. He has gained a LOT of momentum. Tied with pos Crist now!
As little as 2 weeks ago everyone in FL thought it would be a Crist steamroller. Now the latest Quinnipac has them tied.

2. .
I read that around 20% still don't know enough about him. His momentum hopefully continues.
Even if he is not the favourite candidate for some Dems, I think we really need a democratic Governor in states like Florida.

6. I am SO glad to see this
This Floridian has been very worried, as Davis has been nearly non-existent until now.
