Foley Checked into Pricey Arizona Rehab Center

October 25, 2006 5:34 PM

Vic Walter and Heather Nauert Report:

Former Rep. Mark Foley checked himself into the Sierra Tucson Treatment Center in Arizona two days after he resigned from Congress in disgrace, ABC News has learned.

Lawyers for Foley confirm he's been an inpatient at the facility since Oct. 1.

Sierra Tucson advertises itself as a place where "pain is met with compassion, fear is met with reassurance, and anger is met with understanding." In addition to treating drug and alcohol abuse, it is "licensed to facilitate healing for psychiatric issues," including "Sexual Addiction/Compulsivity."

A typical 30-day inpatient program costs about $30,000. As he approaches the end of that period, Foley could be expected to go through "family week" where close friends and family members are invited to join him and meet with counselors.

1. Well let us all hope that there's a jail sentence in his future so
that he can see how us plebs get over our 'problems'/

2. For most people, the "trial" comes BEFORE "the healing"...
...and that's the big insult here. I'm not saying that people who have problems don;t deserve help. No matter what Foley did, he's entitled to the same "healing" that anyone in his shoes would receive...AFTER their day in court.

3. Same rehab his partner in crime Lamebawl went to
as I recall. Yes, it's a rich man's rehab, a country club where they're pampered so maybe they won't notice they're not getting their drugs of choice. It's also a hideout from bad press.

4. So perhaps instead of being there for alcoholism ...
... he's there to utilize their sexual addiction counseling services, and liquor is just a "more acceptable" cover?

Would make sense to me!

6. I think the primary reason is to sideline him during the midterms...
...and the secondary reason could be the sexual addiction counseling, but think of it this way: He's in the position he's in because he got caught.

Today is the first time in the last few weeks where any Foley-specific current stories have appeared. There have been ongoing bits about Hastert and private messages and interns, but no one's really talked about Foley in the present tense. They really did yank him out of circulation, and from what I can see in the article I linked to, "Family Week" should keep him there until shortly after November 7th.

8. There is a sucker born every minute and Sierra Tucson is going to
take advantage of as many of them as they can get their cold clammy hands on.

Foley skated for forty years without any problem until he got caught.

Sierra Tucson provides frivolous treatment for frivolous "problems."
