New Jersey's gay rights favor revives Republican right

WASHINGTON (AFP) - In ruling that homosexual couples have the same constitutional rights as heterosexual couples, the New Jersey Supreme Court threw a much-needed bone to conservative Republicans trying to galvanize their glum voter base.

A religious right organization, "Concerned Women for America", denounced the ruling as a move by agenda-driven judges wanting "to force" people to accept homosexual marriages.

But the group, just like the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights and the Alliance Defense Fund, recognized it as a "wake-up call" for their faithful.

The conservatives immediately used the bonanza to remind voters to support a ban on gay marriage, scheduled for a referendum in eight states on November 7, along with legislative and gubernatorial elections.

"Nothing less than the future of the American family hangs in the balance if we allow one-man, one-woman marriage to be redefined out of existence," said James Dobson, president of Focus on the Family.

"This decision in one state is exactly what Republicans needed to activate social conservatives around the country," said Larry Sabato, a professor at the University of Virginia.

Sabato predicted that the decision would allow Republicans to save at least three Senate seats that had been expected to go to Democrats in key states holding referendums on same-sex marriage.

If the Republicans keep their seats in Missouri, Tennessee and Virginia, they would likely retain control of the 100-seat Senate. Democrats need to gain six of the 33 contested seats to gain majority control.

Sabato said that in reinserting the gay marriage issue into the heart of the political debate, the New Jersey Supreme Court will mobilize nationwide an indispensable base for the Republican Party of
President George W. Bush, which had been begun to slip away.

I wouldn't doubt that some of those "Concerned Women" are indeed married to homosexual men...They just don't know about their extra-curricular activities. At least not yet.

...a few times too often. The scary homo-ho-mo-ho-ho-hom-homo-sexuals are old news. The sky hasn't fallen, the churches haven't imploded, the rapture hasn't raptured, the horse is out of the barn and several miles down the road. IOW, this is a certified YAWN.

But if they want to pin their GOTV efforts to it, they're more than welcome. I never try to stop people beating dead horses, it only wastes my time and slows up the decay process.
