GOP has warnings about shift
Party says Democratic victories would be disastrous

WASHINGTON -- Seeking to boost turnout and sway voters, Republicans are issuing dire warnings about a Democratic victory that would make Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi the speaker of the House and put key Democrats in charge of committees with power to raise taxes, launch investigations and impeach the president.

On Web sites, in news releases and on the campaign trail, the GOP portrays such Democratic lawmakers as New York's Charles Rangel, Michigan's John Conyers, California's Henry Waxman and Massachusetts' Barney Frank as political villains who would overturn or trim major GOP initiatives.

Rarely have potential heads of committees of a new Congress been so vilified by name in opposition campaign material. "I don't see how it will be effective," said Waxman, due to take over the House Government Reform Committee if Democrats win control of the House.

Republicans cite Waxman as a man who would be in charge of "Investigations Central" if Democrats win. The California Democrat said he would be fair and nonpartisan in his probes of fraud, waste and abuse but added that investigations are needed. "The Republicans have given us 12 years of lessons of how not to behave."
