DeWine hits rock bottom in debate
Poor Mike has nothing left to run on, no way to defend his record or that of his GOP bosses. So what does he do? He resorts to this:

CLEVELAND - Republican Sen. Mike DeWine on Friday sharply criticized his Democratic challenger going all the way back to his days as Ohio secretary of state more than 20 years ago, accusing Sherrod Brown of running a "scandal-ridden office" and being an absent lawmaker who has not helped the state.

...And in 1983, while secretary of state in Ohio, Brown's office was investigated by law enforcement because of allegations some staffers were dealing drugs, DeWine said.

"U.S. Rep. Brown in his eight years as secretary of state had a scandal-ridden office. Three different times the State Highway Patrol investigated his office," DeWine said. He said the patrol investigated allegations including that employees sold drugs in the mail room."

snip

Mike even alleged that someone in the SOS office under Brown was alleged to have HIDDEN MARIJUANA INSIDE A BANANA.

I swear, when he brought all this up, the entire room burst out laughing.

Of course, DeWine neglected to mention that the allegations were investigated, found to have no merit and no charges were ever filed. Another faux GOP scandal.

Actually, it was painful to listen to DeWine during the debate. He was a desperate man, grasping at something to give him traction and help turn the race around. He had nothing. All the newspaper endorsements in Ohio are meaningless because everyone knows DeWine and the GOP have nothing but more of the same to offer and Ohio isn't buying anymore.

Sherrod was excellent, superb. He stressed his bipartisan record of being able to get the job done in Congress, because he's always believed you can get more done if you don't care who takes credit. He also mentioned the tremendous potential for Ohio to him in the Senate working with his friend, Ted Strickland, as governor to turn Ohio around and get it back on the right path again. He's such a likable guy, and that is what is hurting DeWine so much - attacking someone who is a warm and friendly person.

1. First Harris, now DeWine....
...boy, when Little Monkey's crime family leaves you high and dry they certainly leave you twisting in the wind.

I'll bet a fat man to a skinny mule that DeWine ends up institutionalized by next year.

2. He'll get a golden parachute
the GOP always takes care of their own.

He's just been making a total ass of himself, but really all we're seeing is the real DeWine. Just like Allen and the others, you get any of these GOP'ers behind closed doors and, regardless how they appear to the public, they turn into Freepers.

5. We need to start a campaign to send Dewine bananas
Everyone send bananas to the Dewine campaign offices.

Leave out the marijuana though.

10. Good idea!
At first I thought he was going to say someone was accused of smoking banana peels. Remember that old 60's urban legend?

6. that's a lot of allegeing--did anything prove out in court?
I guess not, or else their would have been a "conviction" in there somewhere.

This is weak.

8. Nothing ever came of it, no charges filed
I think some rumors must have been circulating at the time. Brown was very young for a Secy of State at the time, had longish hair, and the old stalwart GOP'ers thought of him as a "hippie", so there was a lot of silly rumors floating around. Sherrod called for the investigation himself and when nothing came of it, that was it.

That's why everyone laughed when DeWine brought it up. I suppose it was such old news that had been re-hashed many times before when he ran for office.

7. We must get away from calling ethanol an energy solution
It is popular because powerful people in rural Ohio want it. All of them in agribusiness already profit by corn subsidies, and just want a market and more taxpayer largesse.

12. Woolybear Festival - 2006 . . .
This is in my former Podunk town of Vermilion Ohio . . . we went to the parade and Sherrod Brown was in the parade shaking the hands of most of the spectators on foot. Not on a float waving, but reaching out to the people.

And Howdy DeWine was where . . . .?

Oh, right, not his job to meet the unwashed non-donors.

18. When it comes down to pot in a banana, there's probably not much
left in a campaign.

Somehow I don't see voters in Akron or Mansfield turning on Brown on the accusation that he may have hidden weed in a banana.

It seems to lack true resonance as a campaign issue, as a momentum hinge.

20. Hi, Jeff In Milwaukee. I'm wondering what happened to the DeWine
campaign. I'm kind of delighted that Brown is so far ahead, but not a few days ago, it was fairly close.

It's as if the bottom just fell out.

27. Dewine has always had a problem...
with the Republican Base. To give the devil his due, Dewine has never been a religious nutjob, and the religious nutjobs who elected him have never been completely comfortable with her performance.

Same goes for Voinovich -- it will be interesting to see if the former governor "gets religion" in the next few years.

28. I didn't know that about DeWine.
Is this Voinovich's last term, I wonder? He's still pretty popular in Ohio, seems like, but he's a bit long of tooth these days.

21. Another interesting thing
As people were leaving the ballroom after the debate, all those with DeWine stickers on their lapel were quickly peeling them off.

Hearing Mike DeWine go on a freeper rant during the debate today was just too much for his more urbane and intelligent voters to handle.
The upper crust of the GOP/corporate elite in this town had always managed to keep the illusion alive that DeWine and Voinovich were somehow different than the right wing GOP ideologues. What a shock it must have been when they finally realized the truth.

25. At least he didn't rely on the Man/Boy Love Assocation
Hey, I'm assuming he didn't. Haven't seen the debate replay yet.

That was Blackwell's desperate tactic in the final debate last week. Republicans are hilarious to watch when the fear angle isn't working and they throw Mail Marys, one more pathetic than the next.

I'm amazed Brown is positioned to win by this margin. I place emphasis on historical numbers but sometimes local matters trump everything and it's death to be a Republican in Ohio this year. Plus Sherrod has run a terrific race. I favored Hackett as the nominee and some of us who said that need to come forward and admit we were wrong. Even if Hackett could have won this easily, hardly a certainty, Brown is the more liberal of the two so this is a big plus. I'm confident Brown can hold the seat for multiple terms.

Let's hope the secretary of state race also goes to the Democrat. I think her name is Brunner, or something like that. Last I checked the polling was tight.
