Fast-growing demographic, tending Democratic, targeted in election: Single women
NYT/Reuters: Unmarried Women Targeted in Election
By REUTERS
Published: November 1, 2006

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - For one Hollywood actress, the first time was in a garage. Another did it when she was 18. A third researched all the positions before doing it.

And they're not talking about sex. Angie Harmon, Felicity Huffman and Regina King are starring in a political ad, recalling the first time they voted.

The public-service ad is part of an effort to motivate more women, particularly "women on their own'' -- single, divorced and widowed -- to go to the polls on November 7.

"They are the fastest growing demographic group in this country,'' said Page Gardner, president of Women's Voices Women Vote, the group that produced the ad.

"In 2004 they were 22 percent of the electorate yet there were still 20 million unmarried women who did not vote,'' she said. "If they voted in higher numbers ... they could literally help determine the agenda in this country.''

Unmarried women tend to lean Democratic, political experts said....

1. Great news -- but why is the intro paragraph so demeaning?

2. That's a description of the TV ad. The sexy double-entendre...
I think is meant as an attention-grabber for the message, which turns out not to be about sex, but voting.

4. Understandable, and I realize you aren't defending it, but this
is precisely the problem.

Why would women get fired up to vote when the message once again treats them in a demeaning way?

7. Doesn't the title give it away though?
Wait, that came out wrong.

3. Geez, took long enough. That's a gold mine. And not just single women.
"SINGLES" are THE segment that NO ONE targets. Too busy pandering to "family values" and "moms" I guess.

And fachrissake, they sure as hell should. All of these individuals, many of them renters, not all of them young (I know some sixty something never-married singles who are happily in that state) and no one EVER addresses their issues. There's no tax breaks for them, no discounted public transportation, and no market research about what THEY think is important. Yet more people nowadays are unmarried than married, so go figure?
