Those that read my working people stories, I'm asking for help for KLEEB

Kleeb has taken a lead in the race for Nebraska's third district. No Democrat has won there since 1958. Read this story (and the story in BN about W's visit Sunday) and perhaps contribute to his campaign.

Kleeb sees momentum

BY ROBYNN TYSVER

WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. - A barrage of anti-Scott Kleeb advertising in western Nebraska was seen by its Democratic target Tuesday as a sign that his once-underdog campaign now has momentum.

Kleeb is running for Congress in a GOP stronghold, the 3rd District. His race against Republican State Sen. Adrian Smith has suddenly attracted the attention of national political parties and other groups.

In the past few days, radio and television ads have hit the airwaves courtesy of the Republican National Committee, the Club for Growth and other conservative organizations seeking to brand Kleeb as a liberal who would raise taxes.

"I'm getting slammed right now with all sorts of negative advertisements," Kleeb told an audience of about 80 senior citizens in Grand Island. "That's what happens when a campaign is struggling. They go negative."

Kleeb said interest in the 3rd District is a clear signal that the race is tightening and that history could be made on election night. If Kleeb were to prevail, he would be the first Democrat elected in the state's western region since 1958.

One key criticism reflected in the advertisements is Kleeb's position on President Bush's 2002 tax cuts. The Democrat supports some of the tax cuts, including a reduction of the marriage penalty and the doubling of the child tax credit, but not all.

One of his concerns, he said, is that the tax cuts were not "broad enough" and favored the wealthy.

He said he also does not believe in a complete repeal of the estate tax. He believes that it should be structured to protect the estates of ranchers and farmers worth up to $5 million or $7 million from inheritance tax.

"Are there parts of the Bush tax cuts I think we can do better? Yes," Kleeb said. "We have to find a way to make sure tax cuts are equitable and broad-based."

Kleeb vehemently objects to the "liberal" tag. "Does a liberal get an NRA endorsement?" he asked, referring to the National Rifle Association.
