WERNIGERODE, Germany (Reuters) - The children of a Nazi program aimed at creating an "Aryan elite" met publicly in Germany on Saturday in an effort to banish the specter that has haunted many of them since their birth.

The "Lebensborn" or "font of life" project comprised a series of homes launched by Heinrich Himmler's SS that were to provide the stock to help run a Nazi empire. The homes were popularised later as stud farms for a blond-haired, blue-eyed master race.

Matthias Meissner, managing director of Lebensspuren ("traces of life"), a group representing the Lebensborn children, said the meeting was necessary to bring the homes out in the open and lay some of the myths about them to rest.

"The aim was to take the children out into the open, to encourage those affected to find out their origins -- but also to show the outside world that the cliche of the stud farm with blond-haired, blue-eyed parents is not correct," he said.

Many children from the Lebensborn homes, particularly in Norway -- which was seen as the home to the most Aryan stock -- were socially ostracised after the war and they have remained a sensitive topic that is seldom discussed in Germany.

One of around 35 former children present at the first wholly public meeting in Wernigerode, a small town in eastern Germany which once had a Lebensborn home, was 63-year-old Hans Ulrich Wesch.

She was born in Norway to a Norwegian mother and a German officer, who (of course) returned to Germany. Her small family was so ostracized, that her mother "died of heartbreak" (how's that for a euphemism?), and her grandmother took her to Sweden while she was still a toddler, to start a new life.

In her case, this led her to meet the other members of ABBA, become internationally famous, marry a bandmate, divorce that bandmate, marry a prince, and become a princess--a title she still holds, even though her husband died of cancer.

Though she's literally had a fairy-tale life, she has suffered a great deal from depression throughout that life. She was reunited with her father in 1977...but then, some time later, she learned WHY he was her father, and she has refused to deal with him since.

She just got married again, and hopefully she'll find happiness, after all these years....

Tho he wasn't a lebensborn, I'm sure he got his share of the ostracism. It's not a subject that's talked about, not even now, 60 years after. The "German brats" as they were called have tried to get a formal apology from the Norwegian government because of the way they were treated after the war - often they were placed in orphanages or foster homes, and the Norwegian government deemed them inferior. They even considered sending them to Australia, to rid Norway of these children. Last year, a number of them appeared in debate programs on tv, and in the afternoon, after they'd presented their petition to the Parliament, they'd been sitting in a cafe, and several of the other guests had treated them as lepers, moving away from their table, and saying nasty things.

Norway still haven't lanced this wound; I don't know whether it is because Norway was considered the cradle of the Aryan race and Norwegians are still conflicted about this preferential treatment by the Germans, or whether Norwegians just are small-minded and petty, but the virulent reaction to these children suggest something wrong with the national soul.
